    Thanks @billconner and @firebirdparts, that all makes sense. I'll probably go the cutting the drywall route as that sounds like it'll give me the best attachment. I don't mind paying a bit extra for the piece of mind of tripling up 2x12s for the header. I guess the one question I didn't think...
