I ended up using Rivnuts to attach 2x4s & 2x6s directly to the square metal studs using 5/16-18 bolts. I used two bolts/Rivnuts in each metal stud. I didn't take pictures unfortunately, but so far the work top is extremely stable as I've used it to walk on without any issues.
No snow loads in central Texas.
Regarding the # of fasteners, i have no issues using however many are needed. I'm just looking for ideas on how to do it right. This will be my last shop and want the work bench/shelves to be permanently affixed.

The wall thickness appears to be approximately 1/16". I can' measure it to be 100% for sure.
I do have a welder and like the elevator stud idea. Do you know where I can get them?
My new 30'x30' shop is framed with 3" square tubing. I want to permanently attach 2x4s in certain places for my workbench, shelving, etc. Whats the best way to accomplish this? Selftapping screws? Toggle bolts? I would prefer an option that I dont have to worry working lose over time. TIA!
