I ended up using Rivnuts to attach 2x4s & 2x6s directly to the square metal studs using 5/16-18 bolts. I used two bolts/Rivnuts in each metal stud. I didn't take pictures unfortunately, but so far the work top is extremely stable as I've used it to walk on without any issues.

But can self drilling screws actually support 50 - 100 lbs on a shelf and stand up to a 5 lb sledge hammering on a work bench attached using them?

The wall thickness appears to be approximately 1/16". I can' measure it to be 100% for sure. I do have a welder and like the elevator stud idea. Do you know where I can get them?

My new 30'x30' shop is framed with 3" square tubing. I want to permanently attach 2x4s in certain places for my workbench, shelving, etc. Whats the best way to accomplish this? Selftapping screws? Toggle bolts? I would prefer an option that I dont have to worry working lose over time. TIA!

@DOORED have you applied your sealer yet? I've got a brand new building/slab that I want to protect like you. Any feedback?

Hello, new to these forums and looking for ideas to setup my new 30'x30' shop (steel building). I will be storing 1 car (Nova) and at least 2 Harleys in the shop in addition to a large assortment of shop equipment.
