Lol! I agree. That one went down along with a few others after I posted my finished vise pics.

Thanks! edward472 set me straight on that. I had no idea they didn’t come with a chain etc. Dlavallee22 helped explain what a swivel jaw is etc. I’ve learned a lot in a few weeks. Great forum!

My first rodeo with vises. I was given this Reed 403 1/2 in the 80’s by a friend. Not until this month did I find time and interest in cleaning her up. With help from good GJ folks I learned about swivel jaws and how to find the date stamp (1240). A little elbow grease & 2 coats of Rustoleum...

So I’ve just recently started a refurb of my Reed 403 1/2. Had it stripped down to bare metal. No date stamp I could see except a 34 under the swivel jaw. Can anyone provide help with that? I’m stumped. Thanks, Tim

OK. Got the swivel pin out thanks to overnight use of Kroil. Curious if you know more about the vintage/value of this vise.

Thanks! Is there anyway to tell the year of mfg? Value?

OK, nice. Is there anyway to tell the year of mfg? Value? I’m keeping it in the family so just curious. My plan is to sand this vise as much as possible and or have it media blasted and then paint it. Any tips on the painting process, type etc? It works perfectly so I’ll just grease everything...

Swivel jaw pin? I’m a rookie here. I tried moving that pin on top with Channel Locks but it wouldn’t budge. What is it for? BTW...it’s not obvious to me how to remove/replace the jaws. 🤔

I have a Reed 403 1/2. Given to me years ago by a friend. Can anyone tell me about it? What’s the screw on the side for? Oil? I noticed there’s no obvious way to replace the jaws. My plan is to restore it and secure it on my workbench.
