What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

It's gone both ways before, no doubt. Call it general decline. I'd say engineering has been hollowed out. Around here, it's still not legal to even call yourself an Engineer without a PE license, although no one pays much mind to that. To get the license you had to have 4 years experience...

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

But nobody thinks they know more than the typical engineer thinks they know.... Fresh from high school class, straight to college class and then they are "the Engineer". Diploma mill recipients the majority of them....

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

Quite a few Man-cards need to be handed over here ;) Robertson screws are very good unless cheaply made. Almost never have an issue with popout or stripping, unlike the much inferior Phillips, which as pointed out already, leads often to misery due to both poor screws & tools. IIRC, Phillips...

Trying to weld repair rusted out pellet grill. Material issue

Good idea, if the controls were... but it's a Cuisinart.... The control knob has to have constant slight pressure pushing into it to keep it on. Cuts out if I let go. Not high quality. I'm gonna take Bert's advice and be done with it. Easier than rivets even.

Trying to weld repair rusted out pellet grill. Material issue

It was coated; paint would have given up with the flapper. Ceramic would make sense since it was quite hard to grind through. And...maybe I'm not through it yet. Sure looked like it though. Yeah, I'm not expecting much from it. Wife called me yesterday about a pellet grill someone had set...

Trying to weld repair rusted out pellet grill. Material issue

Holes are bigger than pluggable. I'll need to weld multiple holes in one area with roughly a 6x6" patch. Other holes are 1-2" diameter.

continuous sheet of metal between ground and repair area.

Trying to weld repair rusted out pellet grill. Material issue

No pics yet. Yeah, meter was on Ohms. Touched probes together...continuity. Cuisinart Woodcreek. Questionable whether it's worth much effort I'd guess, but it looks to work otherwise, and I like welding projects. I won't be spending any significant money on it, or time. Someone let the...

Trying to weld repair rusted out pellet grill. Material issue

I'm salvaging a pellet grill. It has a few rust areas in the main chamber walls that I planned on mig welding some plate to cover. I ground down to steel for the ground and where to weld, but couldn't get an arc. Continuous sheet of metal on the smoker. I checked it was steel with magnets...

Ramset Model 340 Hammer Drill - what types of bits does it take? - SOLVED!?!

Apologies everyone. I couldn't even get the model number right. It is a Model 340, not 540. With that, I came across a few auctions with pictures. Looks like the original bits were tri-shank, based on this post. What I have must have an adapter that converts the tri-shank to something like...

Ramset Model 340 Hammer Drill - what types of bits does it take? - SOLVED!?!

I wish I could find some good descriptions or images of the old SDS geometry. i find no images, and many of the descriptions are contradictory. Some links state that there is no difference between SDS & SDS-plus; others state that there were 2 slots in SDS and 4 in SDS-plus. Many of these...

Ramset Model 340 Hammer Drill - what types of bits does it take? - SOLVED!?!

I inherited an older German made Ramset model 340 hammer drill. I've not been able to find a manual or much of anything else about it online. I bought some SDS plus bits and was hoping they would work with it. They slide in perfectly, but do not lock in. I checked out the bore of the chuck...

    Is converting a pipe-framed barn to a shop cost-effective?

My connections are pretty good. $5K sounds like a bargain, and $10K I could probably stomach. How much would a new 20 x 40' building complete run? Another thing I forgot to add is that being in a 100 year flood plain, I'd have to add a retention pond to my property to compensate for the new...

    Is converting a pipe-framed barn to a shop cost-effective?

Yes, I weld and plan on doing plenty of it here. Money's not a big issue, but I'm not spending too much given the limitations already mentioned. I should be able to do this on the cheap in some ways. I've got plenty of old metal roofing from a neighbors teardown. I don't much care what the...

    Is converting a pipe-framed barn to a shop cost-effective?

I do want to keep it simple. Not trying to rival a house finish. Part of the motivation to transform this one is that if I build a separate building, I get taxed for a new structure, which where I am are bad enough. I really just want to enclose it to keep the animals & dust out, have a solid...
