    Fire...

When I built my new detached garage my city required I put in fire sprinklers. I was real unhappy at first but the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea. Looking at those photos just reinforces that. Kurt O.

What would you do before you drywall?

And..... before you close it up take photographs for reference. Then you'll have a record of how your wires were routed and how the studs are arranged, etc etc. Kurt O.

Atomic Industry World HQ: Part 5 (The Door)

Those doors are outstanding! I wanted to do something similar with the 8'x8' side door on my garage. Unfortunately the cost was beyond my budget. I ended up with a pair of plain steel doors. In the future I hope to cut some windows into them and do some wood applique to give that carriage feel...

    Compressor Regulator Question

Thanks. That's kind of what I had figured but it's good to get a second opinion. Kurt O.

    Compressor Regulator Question

Quick question. I am plumbing my garage for air. Can I mount a regulator vertically as opposed to horizontally? That is, the flow would go in the bottom and out the top. This is an inline regulator (no separator) from TP Tools. Plumbing it vertically would save me some space and eliminate a...

    Whatcha got there, Jap junk?

I used to work for a company in the mid-'70s that sold those tools. It was a wholesale warehouse and we sold mainly tools and tape to hardware stores and auction houses around the country. I built most of my first tool set with Allied tools from that place. I liked them, they were well made and...

Can you bury the Main electric line into the house?

I'm in So Cal and a So Cal Edison customer. My house is now 60 years old and I had overhead power service from a pole at the rear corner of the property. When I went to build a new detached garage I initially wanted to underground the lines to the main panel on the house. My contractor looked at...

    Made In The U.S.A.

I was going to list Maglite but I recall an article I read that they are not 100% American made. They want to be but apparently they cannot find a US company that makes O-rings. I have had a 4-D cell Maglite for over 30 years. It's been everywhere, in my car, camping, under the house, in the...

    Crazy/Stupid things you have seen

One morning I pull into the local Home Depot and see a guy by the door loading boxes of Italian ceramic tile into the miniscule trunk of a Lamborghini Countach, a real one, not a Fiero kit. This was before cameras in cel phone so no pics. Kurt O.

    Compressor mounts for free!

I'm in So. Cal. by the beach. I have a bag of about 2 dozen hockey pucks out in the garage. They make great jack pads. There's lots of hockey in So. Cal., even in Pasadena; http://www.pasadenahockey.net/ One of my sons former team mates was just drafted by the Penguins in the first round of the...

Gave up on the permit/inspection process today.

Write the city manager. Be polite, state your case. If that doesn't get any action, attend a city council meeting, they usually have a public comment period. You can basically stand up and explain the situation. They should be interested considering they are the ones loosing the revenue from the...

    elevated car storage ??

I made this from lumber and steel Strong-Ties. It's also bolted to the back wall. Cars are pretty lightweight. Only the bottom one has an engine and trans. the top one is pretty much just a frame and body shell. Cost was about $450, most of that in the steel ties. and lag screws. Cheers, Kurt O.
