yes the joint will loosen up after a while. the reason why its stiff when new is because it has a lock washer on one side between the handle and head of the joint, putting pressure against the walls. if you want it to be loose just remove the washer. i prefer the stiff joint over the loose but...

i'd go with 7 and 12. where a 6" fits most likely a 7" will fit plus extra leverage same goes for 10 and 12. i did the same with the cobras 7" and 12" + 16" :D which was a good move.
