One of the symptoms of oxygen deficiency I was taught to look for is "reduced cognitive ability". Basically it makes you too stupid to realize you're now stupid.

Sounds like oxygen deficiency to me. Worst part about a situation like that is mental capacity is reduced so you can't even tell something is going wrong. A guy I work with almost died from CO2 because of that.
