    Installing Windows

I went through this about 2 years ago with the house I purchased (also 8 yrs old). No evidence of any problems until we had a really bad storm and about a week later a piece of trim in my kitchen pulled away just a little. When I investigated, I found a real mess. All my siding was removed...

    Battery Backup Sump Pumps

I have a Liberty 441 I installed about 1.5yrs ago. Earlier this month I was out of town on business and we lost power at our house in a heavy rainstorm. My wife called me panicking because there was an alarm going off in our basement, which was the backup sump pump doing its job - the alarm...

    AC troubles at home

Is the compressor shutting off when the outdoor fan stops? If not, it may be the capacitor. If you take the control box cover off, look at the capacitor and see if it is bulged out at the top (like a soda can that has been pressurized). If the compressor also stops, it may be a high or low...

Tyvek vs the 'tarp' style house wraps?

Having just repaired a TON of water damage around every window in my 10yr old house that I bought 2 years ago, I also recommend plastic corner flashing as well...

Problem with my York furnace rapid red code

I wouldn't recommend leaving the filter out if there are animals in the house. If she also has air conditioning, all of that fur can build up on the evaporator and restrict airflow and really cause some problems and be difficult to clean.

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Ten Pound Garage

Cool car - I meant to say the Ultralite was just over 1000 lbs. That thing was an absolute rocket! Good luck with the project!

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Ten Pound Garage

Congrats! I think I met you several years ago when I was at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson. Does your Caterham have an S2000 engine it and is just over 1000lbs?

    luxaire furnace reliability?

Luxaire is a brand of Johnson Controls. They have been investing heavily in their new products and manufacturing - their quality has vastly improved, and continuing to do so. They were the first out with a 33" furnace 10 years ago, so the product is much more mature than the others on the...

    Opinions/Reviews on Simonton Windows?

Yeah - House wrap was not required per code in my area until a year after my house was built. I bought it in 2015 and unfortunately had no idea that there was water damage. I am pulling all of my siding off, removing all windows, and wrapping the house. Unfortunately, I bet a lot of houses...

    Opinions/Reviews on Simonton Windows?

I have Simonton in my 10 year old home. They weren't installed properly and I have water damage that I am in the process of fixing. The issue seems to be in the fixed picture windows. On the new construction windows, there is not a continuous flange all the way around the frame - they have...

General HVAC question re. longevity of unit

A compressor replacement is going to cost more than $500 (probably around $700 - $1000). Personally, I wouldn't replace a failed compressor on a 15 yr old unit, unless a warranty paid for it. In general, packaged units tend to last longer than split systems, as they are assembled and charged...

Condensation dripping from furnace flue pipe

Right, but he says this only happens when the heater is running.

Condensation dripping from furnace flue pipe

With metal Vent, it's not a condensing furnace, so there won't be a condensate line for the furnace. Does the vent sag anywhere? Flue temp on an 80% furnace should be over 400F. If there is a long flue, the temperature of the flue could drop enough causing condensation. How long is the flue?

    Where to put the outside A/C unit: S, W, E, or N?

True - the affect on installed efficiency is with all other things being equal. But, I would sacrifice a bit of lineset length to keep the OD unit in a cooler location, with the possible exception if that lineset is run in an attic. The distance to a main panel has little to do with power...
