So thanks to all that tried to help. I ran a dedicated, 10awg circuit to the lift and this cured the problem. It was simply a case of voltage drop causing the contactor to chatter and not pull in.

I uncrated the lift brand new, so yes, it is the original motor....

Thank you grounded-b. I already bought #10 wire to run from the breaker box, and will look into another contactor, although that is identical to the one that came installed in the unit....I do see the point.

It is a 110v motor. See plate pic

The motor is 110v. The contactor is an exact replacement of the original.

Powered from a 120v wall socket. As I said earlier it has worked for many cycles with the contactor chattering a couple of times and then holding. Now it just chatters but won't start. It lifted the load fine on 120v.

Could someone take me through the order of occurrences from the moment I push the button? What happens next, and then next, etc... Like, I push the button on the lift, this sends power to.....the contactor? What happens from there to the moment that the lift begins to operate?

It has a start capacitor and a run capacitor. I wonder if one of them is bad?

I think that you are probably right. It was purchased new. I think that the fact that I plugged it into a 100 ft 12 gauge extension cord from day 1 is why it chattered in the beginning. It would chatter a bit then catch and work fine. Now it doesn't do anything but chatter a bit.

Line voltage I believe.

Not sure how to go about checking that....I have a cheap digital meter.....never used it though....
