A modest renovation of my 2 car attached garage

thanks  Been working hard on sheetrock the last couple of days, here is the back wall actually starting to look like a wall. Maybe I should have staggered my joints but it was easier to go around all the obstacles this way. Also should be slightly easier to tape/mud At the moment I...

This would be true with romex. All connections need to be inside boxes, and I would never do this anyway as I think it's sloppy. However, the wires in question here are low voltage ~22AWG wire for the garage door safety sensors. I don't see any problem with properly soldering and taping these...

Haha! Good to hear somebody else likes overkill when it comes to lighting, as far as I'm concerned you can never have enough :shocking: When I first bought the house, there were two 60W incandescent lightbulbs on the ceiling of the garage, and that was it

Alright, so lots of work done tonight but not a lot to show for it. Almost finished with installing the ceiling boxes. 14 total, 12 over the main floor area. Six on one switch, and six on another. All will be two-bulb (32W each), 48", T8 fixtures. Here are the two boxes above where the bench...

Thanks for all the comments everybody! Sure! Here are a couple quick ones, I dont have any shot with a real camera :wtf: Good thought. The pic was taken mid-install, I had the same thought and added shims behind the hinges. Seems like that's where the door frame would be under the most...

More progress today, got almost all of the 5/8" up on the walls between the house and the garage. Spent lots of time cutting pieces around the pipes, but that was the worst of it. I'm hoping to get back to wiring the ceiling tomorrow night

A modest renovation of my 2 car attached garage

A little update: Started wiring in the ceiling boxes, added a receptacle in the ceiling in the middle of the room (I'm thinking possible retractable droplight). Also, the existing receptacle for the garage door opener is up inside the ceiling, so I moved that down flush with the ceiling, right...

A modest renovation of my 2 car attached garage

Here is a quick and dirty sketch of what I'm thinking for lighting The top two would be on their own circuit with a switch above the bench, not sure if I should split the rest into two switched circuits or not It works out to ~900W over ~480 square feet, for about 1.9 watts per square foot...

Good eye. This particular unit is actually rated to be installed on the floor where flammable vapors could be present, but code in this state has the same requirement. So while it's not a huge safety concern, it will need to be fixed at some point. The worst part is, it was a leased unit that...

http://forums.jlconline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48854 Seems like it's not a huge issue I might cut some holes through the paper and re-tape the poly in those spots just to be sure. Oops!

**** this makes sense. i didnt realize the paper backing was considered a vapor barrier. it's far from a continuous barrier though, and the poly is pressed tight up against it. am i screwed? make some cuts in the paper? tear the poly down? stupid amateur mistake! feeling like a bit of an...

Faced and unfaced were the same price. I figured the faced stuff might be easier to install. Also I feel like having a continuous, taped poly barrier will be much better than relying just on the "vapor retardant" paper backing. I certainly could be wrong though, is there a reason not to do it...

A modest renovation of my 2 car attached garage

Updates from this weekend... Found this inside the wall! It wasn't live, thankfully. I traced it back as far as I could, then cut it and terminated it safely inside a box. Moved onto tearing out the rest of the insulation, and behind it found more mold on the backside of the laundry room...
