Why do you East Coasties and Southerners use block for your foundations?

my $0.02: The deeper a person has to deal with frost, the more likely poured (reinforced) will be. Shifty, wet soil also seems to encourage poured. We've seen some treated lumber foundations also.

Anyone installed geothermal heat pump themselves?

There's a couple other things worth considering. I put a water-to-water HP in my house so I could have in-floor heat and...you guessed it...A/C in the garage! I would suggest that if you have some acreage and the right soil conditions, that there are things beyond just energy savings worth...

120V wirefeed wrecking house elec system?

I'm getting feedback on my house electrical system whenever I use my 120V Lincoln wirefeed welder. Loose grounds, UPS systems tripping, etc. I put a dedicated welder outlet right next to the incoming service disconnect at a 100A panel and still it dims the lights. I fear I'll need to put it...

Why no screens on Jet engines??

Well I 'd have to say Stuart in MN brings the trump card with the NASA gun. Unbeleivable. And maybe a little bit funny. Midly sick, but funny. Well, you know what I mean...mostly funny....:) Stuart, I'm guessing you're a Honeywell engineer. Or Alliant Tech? I'm in the Twin Cities also...

Why no screens on Jet engines??

I think you'll find that, of the 200 in the past 28 years, the vast majority of them were in small craft: ultralights, Cessna 172's, etc., where you have the unfortunate combination of light craft, single engines, inexperienced operators and surprise. Most of the turbine craft have min 6-8...

Why no screens on Jet engines??

I won't qualify as a know-all, but I think ddawg16 is on the right track. I've heard the chicken story also. The engineers have been battling this for years, balancing safety with adequate performance and efficiency. I don't envy them. On the airflow side, I do know that those turbine inlets...

    Tool cabinet project

Hey! I'd have to run out to the garage and take a pix of it, but I've been using a similar built device as a toolbox for 10 years. I got it in a bankruptcy buyout - it was a file cabinet for checks for a medical billing company. Unlike regular height file cabinet drawers, the 6" high drawers...

    lighting plan for 36x26

Don't know where you live (how far north), but you might want to consider mixing in some incandescent fixtures. I did (Fargo, ND), and really liked it, for 3 reasons: 1. They're cheap 2. They provide a better color spectrum if you're painting 3. They cold-start instantly, unlike the...
