longevity wise it might be good to get some measurements and take them to a local tarp shop that makes/ repairs tarps for semi trucks. that canvas will last a long time, maybe leave a slit towards the top as a vent considering those vacs move a lot of air too.

Previous job used a lot of turret lathes until early 2000s and still a few in use within last few years for just a handful of low run parts not justified to put on cnc lathes. Did you have questions about them?

I'm only 30, so I don't have grandkids, but my guess is that the stuff you were making with the kids was for you or the family but now with the grand kids you're making it for them to learn. Basically a whole different reason behind the project. Just my .02
