I wouldn't block or cover the original fixture box with the surface mount fixture. If anything, I would: - splice the wires together in the original box - drill a hole in a blank cover and place that over the box - run the new wiring out of that hole into some conduit - route the conduit to...

Thanks for the input guys. So if I go hard-wired, two questions: Is one fixture's worth of power enough to power 3 48inch fixtures? If I still want to use gang boxes or similar and conduit for a cleaner look, is there anything I should look out for or any particular methodology I should use?

You would definitely want to use a mat intended for garage use over top of the flooring, but I second the above recommendation to contact the manufacturer. Even with the mat, the weight of the car, heat, friction from turning the wheels, etc., could all damage the flooring underneath.
