    Thanks thats a great reference ... that means a 6x6 at 12 feet probably won't work for me.... i was looking in to it and was thinking .... three 2x6 or 2x8 sistered together to form a beam is stronger then a solid 6x6 or 8x8 ..... what do you think?

    What "ideas" ???? The idea of finding someone with a real life experience pulling an engine like this .... Because there is no complicated concept to figure out here.... all the people responding with the engineering stuff are making seem more complicated ... really i should of just asked...

    Ya perfect ..... but the garage is so small i only have like 2 feet on either side of the car .... do you even think i need the 4x4 vertical posts beside the car ? Or maybe a 6x6 with angle iron on it would work? it won't be anchored to any part of the garage or anything but then it will be more...

    that wasn't a question... That was a statement ....i didnt "ask" anything .. ..If did cut through all the joists .... the walls would fail before the roof... As long as the roof is anchored to the wall properly..... the joists or rafter ties ... tie the rafters of the roof together ... stoping...

    after all the people that think this is a stupid idea... It's kind of got me to thinking I can just buy an engine hoist for 300 bucks and be done with it...I love my house and I love my garage last thing I want to do is damage it... I could probably get one that folds up and I can even store it...
