I've taken similar cabinets before and took the shleves out. I also reinforced them by taking some 2 X 4's and sticking them in each corner. It really helped to strenghten them. Not the prettiest but it made for a quick cheap cabinet.

I would assume this stisps the wax as well, no big deal I guess. Does the WD-40 have any negative impact on the pain/clearcoat I wonder?

Can you tell me how you painted them? I picked up 5 large office metal cabinets I plan on incorporating into my work bench. I'm thinking of using spray paint or else I have the small foam rollers. Looks like you disassembled all the handles and extras before painting.
