Here's my solution - I have a bunch of shelves like this around the garage, 24" deep. I use lag screws into the studs, as well as the heavy duty shelf supports from Home Despot. The 2x4 frame is held together with 3" deck screws, with 1 5/8" screws to hold down the plywood.

Cool ideas! I like the thought about lights on the underside also! That thing Thumper has looks like the base for a surgical microscope.

Definitely a lot of great ideas here! My current bench doesn't have a leg cutout; I'm wondering about a variation using one 44", an 18" side box, with space in the middle for a seat.
