Tool Organisation Was the Wrong Question — We Should Optimize for Speed of Retrieval, Certainty of Return & Protection of Value of tools.

You state that fancy drawer foam is bad because it requires "precise" alignment, digging, and return is fiddly. I don't even use foam, but are we living on the same planet that reaching into a labeled foam drawer is something that increases cognitive load to a degree that its somehow...

New Vim 1/4 Comfort Grip ratchets

I was super excited to see the threads with new USA made ratchets, then I saw the price and cant figure out a single reason to buy. Snap On dual 80 and Matcos 88s are both amazing ratchets and you can find them for more or less the same price, often less (ebay) A snap on TF72 is within 5...

Triumph Drill/MN Twist Drill Closing Facilities in MN

The Iron Range is getting another economic hit with Minnesota Twist Drill shutting down its operations in Chisholm and Hibbing. And it’s complicated, because one reason the company had financial problems is tariffs on foreign steel that help the iron ore industry, including Cleveland-Cliffs, the...

    Reorganizing your drawers...

I mean I think the answer is quite obvious. Tools aren't complex or really unique, they're made to build and fix things. Here's some examples, I can try to explain I guess since you asked. If I collect guns, but I've not shot them, whats the point? Am I a competitive shooter? If I collect...

    Reorganizing your drawers...

Most definitely. Are the ones you're using for projects in another drawer? Bet that one is sweet 🔥 I feel like I haven't bought enough new tools in years to justify a new layout, so just when I'm bored or see a way it could be improved upon.

    Gearwrench 1/4 digital torque wrench?

I've also been using the 1/4 and 3/8th digital with angle at work since the stupid S class steering rack bolt TSB came out circa 2020. Been a great wrench, while most the kids have snap-on I wasn't budgeting for that and this has worked just fine. Angle feature is top.

1/2" Semi-Deep Impact Socket Set Options?

I've also been using the Genius sockets at work for over 5 or 6 years (I think amazon said I bought them in 2019) Not specifically the semi deep but I think just standard 3/8th drive impact sockets. Great for the price if that's the route you're leaning.

Can we completely replace our combo wrenches with ratcheting ones yet?

Absolutely not. The box end is just too large sometimes and in some applications. Just ran into an issue yesterday that required a standard wrench. That said I'd prefer to always using ratcheting but not always doable.

    Rousseau Tool Cabinets

When I was still working kids would stand on these drawers fully loaded with tools to get things from off the top of the hutch we had. Also see people sitting on them to take their break (even tho they have a stool nearby) Handling the weight is a non issue for these things, tanks.

Tekton is looking for a Tool Expert based in West Michigan

Yeah you're exactly right, it seems like given the tech nature of the job (Computers, photography, photoshop, etc) that perhaps hybrid or remote would be viable and obviously open the position up to many many more of us tool nerds. Good point on the CAD stuff, I think back to the average...

Best Non-Marring Sockets for Wheel Lug Nuts?

This works absolutely fine to be honest. Sleeved ones are more or less consumable as they all break after enough use, at least the 5 or 6 various ones I owned. I ended up using a normal socket with electrical tape as you mentioned and this survived until I left the shop. No customer complaints...

Tekton is looking for a Tool Expert based in West Michigan

Is there something wrong with that or? Maybe I'm misreading it but you make it sound distasteful. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants a career change, as being in the field/trades are rather hard on the body. Its honestly sounds like a perfect position for many tool nerds, myself included...

tool allowances for techs starting their careers = great idea

Pretty much this lol. Just pay people what they're worth and stop ******* around with allowances and pizza parties and all this funny business. I see quite a people mention nobody wants to train you and Mercedes will absolutely train you with their drive course/curriculum...

tool allowances for techs starting their careers = great idea

Aren't most industries suffering? Nobody pays enough to have the employee care, its not unique to being a mechanic imo. But on the technician side it doesn't pay well enough, people assume you're a scumbag who cant speak English with worse morals than a lawyer, and the knowledge and tools you...

tool allowances for techs starting their careers = great idea

Are you studying or interviewing technicians or how are you seeing these problems? I'd say zero of this is relevant to the technicians I worked with, you'd be out of the shops I was in in short order, and you'd be literally getting paid less because warranty work requires rather lengthy and...
