I bought a set of metric duralast socket set from big lots a long time a long. I did lots of car repair/junk yarding with them and never had any issues. Lost the ratchet and the extension in the junk yard one time so finally ditched the set. I feel I could get lot more service out them.

There's wayyy more than 1 guy doing this. There are wholesalers who buy returned merchandise from stores like HF, sears, and so on. Then they auction off these merchandise in truck load of pallets to other resellers. These resellers sort through the merchandise to separate "good" condition items...

You can always short circuit the pressure switch to see if the compressor turns on. This is actually the way to diagnose a bad pressure switch.
