Four years ago I got tired of mundane factory work and started installing flooring. Roughly 9 months into that I was offered a job as a carpenter apprentice doing commercial construction building\remodeling restaurants, school buildings, Department stores etc. Three years into that field that I thoroughly enjoyed the company I had been working for went under. At this time I had accumulated a lot of tools of the trade and gained a lot more skills and knowledge thanks to veterans in the field I had worked along side with. I jumped around a bit after that to two different companies and didn't find the comfort or atmosphere I was used to. A few months prior to me working with the last construction company a long-time friend had quit his job and started making furniture in his garage. Fast forward four months and he's turned it into a small successful venture with too many orders to fill and working alone. I found myself working for a company I didn't like or enjoy working for and chose to gamble the dice and walked away from a bad situation. Hopped on board with my longtime friend who was neck deep in custom order furniture projects he needed to complete. We spent two weeks continuing doing business in his personal garage and found a opportunity to expand. Started renting a fairly large 1500 sq foot garage/shop that gave us a lot more room to work in. Now 3 weeks into the new shop we're still settling in and I'm learning new things about wood working my carpentry experience couldn't quite prepare me for. I find myself doing a job that I enjoy again and have found a new satisfaction and level of pride in the work I'm doing. In a time where a lot of guys in my generation are content working service industry or office jobs I find myself following in the steps of the older do it yourself generation. I'm fairly new to wood working outside what I learned in shop class 15 years ago but I'm enjoying the trial and error of it all and the feeling of accomplishment with each project I finish. I'm learning new things everyday and little by little I'm becoming a better craftsman. I have a long way to go and so much to learn but I'm enjoying what I'm doing so much that even after a 12 hr day I don't feel like I've really been working. Almost seems like a hobby I'm getting paid for and I get to learn and intake new information constantly. As long as this venture continues to pay my bills I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing so I can eventually be considered I top tier wood worker. To be a part of the small percentage of the todays generation that uses their hands and tools to create, fix and build things themselves instead of hiring someone to do it. Why go to ikea or big furniture stores when I can make exactly what I want with quality and beauty at a fraction of the cost? Why hire a contractor to do things I can do?
