I would use Deutsch, Weather-pack, Metri-pack or similar to keep the connection from corroding. One of those with die-electric grease should be good.

I tried that once with a small bottle of Mobil 80W90 gearoil. It promptly grenanded in my face and covered me in gearoil. Never again!

Most 12 point sockets are double-hex while 8 point sockets are double-square. Triple-square and double-hex 12 points are not the same. It'll work but the angles on the points are not the same.
