    Questions for the Vise-Knowledgeable

Pictures as requested: No sign of brass, looks like a weld to me. Excuse the mess in the background, I'm still working on setting up my basement. In other news, I found another #51 on craigslist, but it's out in Minneapolis, 6 hours away. If it doesn't sell, I may contact the seller to...

    Questions for the Vise-Knowledgeable

Thanks all for the responses. It's a bummer to hear about the lettering and weld. I guess it will serve for now, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for another #51, or at least another dynamic jaw for one. I don't expect that it will see much intense use/misuse, as I already own a press. The paint...

    Questions for the Vise-Knowledgeable

I recently purchased a Prentiss no 51 vise in need of some TLC and I've been on my way to restoring it. I had a few questions for those that have already gone through this process. 1. Is there anyway to "sharpen" or help define these letters? I'm hoping that the blob letters are not just...

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

Will do. I haven't noticed any issues today, even though it's been 106 degrees today and the AC was working most of the day. Today was a garage cleaning day, so no welding or heavy electrical use.

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

Picture as requested. It's pretty corroded. Additional pictures needed? Should I just look to make sure that that it's crimped in two places? I'm going to need a taller ladder to reach those connections. Same thing with the transformer. I looks like there's some plaque/writing on the side of...

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

Yup, they just trimmed that twist connector off and replaced it with a **** splice. I wish I had been there when the PoCo technician dropped by. That way I would have more details about what really happened.

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

I assume the power company did, before I moved into the house. I'll get a closer look tomorrow!

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

Alright, picture time. Transformer: The rust is not very visible in the picture, but it is there, on the cap and below one of the panels. Twistcap: line to house connections:

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

So, the news from the Power Company is that standard operating procedure is first sending a technician out to clean up the connections first, and then if the problem persists they replace the transformer. Which is good, because I had some misgiving about the twistcap connectors on the line from...

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

Thanks all, for the helpful advice. Here's the outcome so far: - I missed their business hours Tuesday and I couldn't reach them by phone, instead I sent them an email, which was answered this morning. This afternoon around 2pm (judging by the reset clocks) a technician was sent out and he at...

    I'll do that tomorrow!

    Stabilizing 220 voltage?

For a year or so, I've been having some voltage fluctuation/brown-out issues in my house. This is just a minor issue with house appliances (who cares if the blender occasionally trips a breaker?), but it's been annoying with my 220v welder and mini-mill/lathe(110v). Ideally, I'd like a way...

Just joined! I've been admiring people's garages here for quite a while. Now it's time to ask some questions.
