Modifications to the HF 4 and 5 drawer service carts - what changes have you made?

Well, I've been working on a 60's john deere 4010. Tearing it apart and rebuilding it. Do you know how many hard lines are on one of those where you need 2 wrenches, one to hold a fitting and the other to break the line loose?

As the owner of an early 70's 2030, I can say I do. I'm cruising this thread now because I am thinking about getting a service cart just for working on the tractor, since it doesn't fit very well in the shop with most of my tools.

I have the 4 drawer unit as well, but turned it into a rolling cart for my plasma torch and use the drawers for its consumables. I folded the lid down the back and set the plasma torch on top into the recessed area.

I have 4 out buildings that have equipment, trailers or vehicles parked in them, a service cart is definitely needed. Only downside is I have to cross gravel for two of the buildings, a 6' grass strip for one, and one has a dirt floor, so I might need a better caster solution, I was hoping to find a mod someone had already done.

How are y'all keeping/securing the tools you're using -- such as loose sockets/etc -- on the folding side tray when your cart gets bumped? I tried some thin rubber adhesive magnetic mat pieces this afternoon. I knew it was a long shot whether they would work but to say I was completely underwhelmed would be too kind.

I used a thicker tool mat material we were throwing out at my last job. Cut it to size, spray adhesive it in place.

Wish I knew where to get more of it.

I like it... keep it modular. Any issues with retention during a lid raising? I'm not very familiar with that system.

No issues with retention. They lock on and stay on. The packout system is rather nice, expensive but nice. I haven't found a small parts sorting system that I like more than these. Sortimo is nicer, but even more $ than packout. There is a ton of aftermarket 3d printed customization for packout which is cool. I just need to get my printer up and running.

Yeah, it's the new Slate Grey color. I really like it and can't wait till they release it in the full size boxes and have more accessories to match. For now I'll use the black accessories as they will fit the theme and work well with it.

Yeah, I keep saying that about the white. Three years ago I gave up and bought green, then the sideboxes went indefinitely out of availability. I'm done guessing with them. White or grey would be killer, though. I just don't have a lifetime to wait for HF to make them happen.

That was my preferred setup. The weight of pliers keep it stuck to the board when you remove one pair.

That said, my pegboard got a little crowded and I went with this style to save some space and I ended up preferring it overall.

Try these, Triton Products pegboard hooks. They will not go anywhere. I have various ones in my garage and shed. They make a number of styles.

I’ve installed the HF shelf on a Craftsman and Dewalt tool cabinet. First mod was to make sure the shelf didn’t collapse from a minor bump. I drilled a small hole through the shelf and ledge then used a small spare hex key wrench to lock the shelf in place. Hex key wrench is easily removed to close the shelf or used as a hex key wrench.

That's a helluva good idea. I have magnets on the cart & tray for when the tray is stowed it won't clang around while rolling it. I'll have to try this idea too.

those little mag hooks from HF come in handy to hold tape, oddball sockets, 3" grinding discs





stole an Amazon's seller idea and made my own mag mounts using HF mags and and amazon garage hooks plus some rivets...i think they came out to like 4$/per. Big impact typically not there but mallets are. Grinder found home on box support beam. Mag socket holder typically inside box.

I may pegboard a wall but do hate pegboards in general for the reason you describe. I came across these & may do the trick at my pricepoint:

My apologies though for not indicating anywhere at all in my post that what I have is two 16"x16" sheet metal pegboard panels from Home Depot mounted on the legs of my 30" HF single-drawer cart. The Pegitz clips do look like they'd work well in wood fiber pegboards... but not in sheet metal pegboards like mine. I've ended up zip-tying my pliers holders in place, which works well. Thanks again.

I saw a youtube guy avoid these things pulling out using a simple paper clip as well. It's not the best looking solution but works pretty well too.

Why go to the work of spraying? Get a different color drawer liner in kitchen section at Walmart or a cheap yoga mat that some guys here endorse as drawer liner?

Snagged this set this weekend while the 5 drawer was on sale. After reading this whole thread I have lots of ideas to implement. I have a bracket in mind that will attach the 2 without cutting or notching. I’ll post pics when I do.
