Pops and I have been busy in the wood shop this winter. Of the many projects the two most notable were an oak railing for the farm shop and a shelf for Mama Bear.

It all starts out the same, planing down some home sawn boards. When we make wood we always save anything that can be sawn up and have amassed quite the stack of lumber in the shed to work with. It’s a great problem to have.

Finished railing.

Finished Mama Bear shelf. Goofy looking shelf but she loved it so that’s what matters !! She gave me a picture of it and I thought it was going to be simple. Ha. This was quite a project but was a fun one because we did a few things we’ve never done before.

If your nephew shoots like some of my friends, that bottom rail should be shot to pieces by now!

BTW--Love the sig line!

I like to go out to the shop when I have nothing to do or when it’s raining and I can’t ride. Right now I’m restoring a trailer to pull behind my Harley-Davidson Tri Glide. Not wood but in between projects , needs paint and reassembled so I can get it out of there and have more room for wood projects.

The wife showed me a picture of the narrow table. At $1500 a piece i thought I would give it a try.
the double wide soon followed. Love working with walnut.

You can a lot of fun things with plywood and 2x material.

This was mostly plywood.

Love your work. Any recommendations regarding the sheet material used for kitchen cabinets? I plan on building them for my new home. Wife wants to buy them but crazy expensive and not impressed with quality. I have plenty of walnut for the face frames and doors but looking for a good source for walnut faced cabinet grade plywood. The box store stuff does not have great reviews.

Are those little doggies like these? Neighbour's dogs we used to look after.

Yes! We have two miniature dachshunds, which is why I built this to match the headboard:

Sorry I don't have any specific walnut plywood recommendations. Any plywood supply house should have a few options. Box store (purebond maple or birch) can be good enough, you just need to hand select each sheet. For walnut I would not want rotary cut.

Suppose it's location dependent look for millwork lumber supply. I use ML Condon in NY tristate area.

Toy box I made for a friend‘s twin boys.
This is box #4 of that I've made over the years going back to 1983 when I built the first version of this box with my Dad for my son.

IMG_8573_Original.jpeg
IMG_8574_Original.jpeg

This was built from a plan I found in an old book titled “One Sheet Plywood Projects”
I’ve learned over the various versions to overkill the hardware even at the cost of looks.
IMG_2487_Original.jpeg
I’ve seen two kids inside and three riding on top of my son’s version! Also seen kids crawling thru the barn doors.
My son’s box was repaired a couple of times.
Lesson learned.

Most of my woodworking is utilitarian or restomod. Almost embarrassing to show it on the same thread as some of the projects shown here. First, though, I've done a few things with some of my kids. The jewelry box was made by one daughter, her twin proudly shows off a blanket chest. The porch swing was free on FBM with a rotted canvas seat. I restomodded it with wood. The quadfold(?) wall tool cabinet was one of my only true, built-from-scratch pieces of 'furniture'. Ellie box 1.jpgCassie Bench.jpgPorch Swing Refurb.jpgTool cabinet 1.jpg

Wifey and I almost always play cribbage after dinner. (we love the game!!). Last summer I decided to make some cribbage boards. (2 player, once around, internal storage for markers, big enough to easily see the scoring holes.)

I used a combination of exotic woods and resins. The outer edge is usually Rosewood or Cocobolo and the scoring lanes are the lightest maple I could find. The 5 pt. index markers are inlaid brass.

A CNC machine sure would have been nice for the drilling but I drilled them one by one.

There was a period of my life when I was really into doing bent ply stuff. The above pic was the first small mock up of this design for a room divider/screen I made out of small scraps of birch veneer and luan I had laying around. The rest of the pics are a full scale commissioned version made from bamboo veneer and luan.

This is a maquette for a coffee table design I did many years ago. Never made a full scale version of it. I was hoping more to license the design and had a manufacturer I really respect on the hook for awhile, but it never happened. Yes, I made some miniature magazines for the photo shoot.

While for the most part cutting boards are boring to make my family enjoyed receiving them as random gifts through the mail. I'm certain I had more in shipping vs materials. I typically save Woodworking projects for the winter time which aligns with daylight savings time and keeps me in motion/ entertained after the 5pm sunsets when I can't do anything outside. Some pictures of the first ones before I shipped them all out. The left overs of all of them is what started the butcher block table. The plugs were used to correct flaws in the lumber or a mistake of mine or my aging equipment.

The brand/ stamp I made myself, I heat it with a torch and hold it with vice grips. . It's VERY crude as I made and welded it myself :ROFLMAO:

I'll add 2 simple end tables and a bed frame made from Apitong. It's STURDY and heavy. The head and foot boards are all joined with 1/2 or 5/8" dowels and West System epoxy. I wanted something simple, couldn't find anything I liked in a store. I had the lumber left over from making bunks for my boat trailer. The guy selling it made me buy it all to get what I needed for the bunks. Apitong is tough on the equipment. All the hardware and legs are from BEAR HOLLOW SUPPLY

Some friends asked for a magnetic knife holder made out of walnut for their kitchen.
I had this hefty piece of walnut in the scrap bin that I picked up at an estate sale that was the perfect size.
Except after the first cut on the tablesaw I realized it was teak and not walnut.
Came out nice anyway.

Nice. I never knew teak was magnetic...LOL.
