I like the lid too but I use it as a shelf when I making stuff and it's kind of annoying that it will then lock the drawers. I might need to remove the lock bar. I've also moved the storage tray down and added another one to the other side.
I am probably going to tear out the lock bar because I will never actually lock mine and it keeps annoying me when I just want to open a drawer.

A hack for this is.
Pull the plastic cap off the lock bar, cut the lock bar off flush with the housing.
then take the piece you cut off and insert it into the plastic cap and save it.
now when you close the lid it won’t lock the drawers, but if you want to latch the drawers just push the plastic cap with the metal piece in it back on the lock bar and closing the lid will lock the drawers.
you can have the best of both worlds.

I now have another task today!

There’s a thread here for those mini toolboxes. Post your pics there too. It may give someone an idea for their roller seat and box.

This.^^^ I've been trying to come up with a reason to buy one of those cute little boxes. You just convinced me!

On my HF Roller, I want to take off the top lift cover hinge and install drawer sliders on the top cover so I can stack stuff on top of the chest and still slide it open to get inside the top cavity space. Either that or just cut big slots in the front and back so I can stick my hands into the cavity to get stuff without lifting the top. Another project on the To-Do list!

There is a Husky HD full size box with a top that lifts a foot or more if you crank it up. Probably not great without a motor. I like the idea for working height. Will see if I can find the model no.
Is it

Model # HOLC7218BB1MYS ???

I saw this on HD website:

That's the general look. It's not a triple bay that I saw in person. The soft close drawers work well.

Snagged one of these during the black friday sale as my first real toolbox. The only mods so far are more omissions than additions.

I left the handle and can holder off the sides to squeeze it in the small spot I made in my small garage, as it doesn't need to move except for once a year to sweep out the garage. I also removed the lid lock and plugged the hole, removed the struts(cup magnets screwed to wall to keep it open), and pulled the plastic drawer locks out as the box doesn't move and the built in slide retention is good enough for me. I also drilled out the rivets that hold the drawer lock bars and removed them so the top is one big unobstructed rectangle.

After messing around and getting it set up and organized the way I want it, I only have one critique. HF is really missing a trick not making an add on 2 or 3 drawer box that fits in the lower opening. Don't get me wrong, I've managed to fill that too, but a few more of the deeper drawers would be pretty sweet.

Agreed. I did buy a 3-drawer Craftsman mid box for that, but haven't had a chance to put it in since that involves partial disassembly of the lower tray, and either cutting clearance into the lower lip or building a riser to get the bottom drawer above the lip.

Related: does anybody have a good paint match for the gray color boxes?

I needed to color match some Durham and Huot cabinets, just took a shelf into my local True Value and they mixed up a quart of XO Rust Oil based Enamel that matched perfectly.IMG_0429_Original.jpeg

Does anyone have a current part number for the Snap-On locking hinges? The cart I have is missing the struts. I can't find the number on the SO website. Or is there another alternative??

Harbor Freight also sells replacement parts for their tool carts, they may have something?

My notes say Snap-On KRBC8T9 hinges should do ya.

I also have this Amazon strut as a possible replacement in my notes.

I'm always curious as to why so many people are having to replace their struts with these locking hinges? My struts are like 10 years old and work just fine. If they quit working, I'd just buy another pair. They are easy to find as these type struts are used on lots of other products.

Thank you! The Snap On part number doesn't come up. I will check with our local rep and see if they are still available.

Those Amazon struts are more $$ than I paid for the box...

Look at some of the photos. Some carts have a couple hundred pounds of tools attached.

@ed_, hope you don't mind me copying this in this thread (originally posted in the Everything 3D Printer thread)
Got tired of how messy my toolbox was so I'm starting to organize it. Figured I'd start with the plier drawer since it was the most chaotic.
1.jpg

I made some racks for the pliers and a sliding tray on top to squeeze out a bit more storage. My printer is too small to make the tray in one piece so it's two halves bolted together.
2.jpg

The tray has a magnet on the back so it won't slide forward every time you open the drawer. You gotta give it a little tug to move it forward.
3.jpg

For ref all the pliers under the tray. There's two different widths of the racks to account for the wider pliers vs the thinner ones. In total it can hold ~23 pliers (not counting the tray)

Quoting here for posterity...

Garage projects have been on hold for a few weeks minus some low level boat maintenance , work schedule during the week and fishing the weekends.

Replaced the stand I had a smaller belt/ disc sander on. It was made out of scrap a while back, served the purpose fine but the storage of extra abrasives was an ongoing exercise of organization. Replaced it with a 30" General cart. I like the organization much better. Removed the locking mechanism so the drawers would open with the lid down, 4 holes in the top and some aluminum angle on the inside to increase the rigidity. Before and after..

Found a better place for my US Gen mini. Built a little riser to sit it on out of some cedar and hit that with plasti-dip. It's movable but it doesn't slide around. Gonna put my mikes and calipers and other delicate tools in it.

IMG_2698_01.jpg

Finally finished my extensions rack, made from pvc similar to the screwdriver rack. Wanted it low since them banging into my cart going in/coming out is not a good thing. The train track ballast works well keeping my cart upright when I open the drawer.

Modded the lid on my 5 drawer cart to have more space underneath it. I really like the cart but didn't like that I couldn't shut the lid due to my pry bars being too tall.

I made it by bending the original lid so it sits 2.5" taller then bent up some metal to fill the sides / front. I also had to relocate the upper lid support brackets to be about 2" higher.
