To keep it short my partner and I found basically a dream home, still sort of close to town for friends and family with a backyard that is a cliff down to a small stream and a 70 mile long rail trail. The house had a modest 2 car garage 20' wide 21' deep and I wanted to build a 1 car stall to hold my boat and be a fun hangout spot. So we ripped up the previous owner's competitive garden bed and I'm building a 14'x24' Amish garage.

Didn't realize it was 3 layers of versa-block thick

Originally this was going to wait until next year, but the quotes I got from the Amish to build the garage were way more reasonable than expected. And the concrete guy called my bluff that he could "start any time". The pad is 14x26 including the 2' apron. Garage is going to be 14'x24' with 10ft walls and a 9'x9' door. I'll need to hire an electrician, but plan to finish out the inside myself. I was somewhat constrained on space, there is a 10' drainage easement from the fence into the yard, but I'm just keeping the concrete wet for a while now and waiting on the structure to go up.

It will be great to have your extra garage shop space but you seem to be losing the nice forested view from your deck and almost all of the natural light coming into whatever room that is that opens onto the deck.

I'm a little worried about it, total height on the garage to the roof point will be 12ft and the deck railing is 13ft from the ground. The kitchen is off of the deck, but we've got some mega windows off of the living room that will still be unimpeded. The basement will lose it's natural light, but I'm ok with that.

Nice looking place you have there.
With all that downslope lawn area behind your new garage, I hope you have thought about drainage. Maybe a built up concrete foundation wall in the back with gravel and a drain pipe daylighting out into the trees????

You know what they say into the trees and out of sight.

Door is in and the boat fits! It's extremely tight width wise through the door with the wheels, but it should be doable. Hopefully finding an electrician this week, but I also bought an engagement ring so I'm broke for a bit.

She said yes which is delightful even if it did push back my shop plans :ROFLMAO:

Christmas eve I got the conduit in place for power and my yard is a mud pit....which my dog loves. Coming up in the next 1.5 months I've got deposits and schedules for
  1. Electric panel and outlets
  2. 12k Mitsubishi Mini Split
  3. Spray foaming the ceiling and gables
  4. I'm going to do the walls with R15 batts and OSB
After all that I'm just hoping to enjoy the space for a while. I'm selling my fishing boat for another project car because I must hate myself or something. I did hang some temporary lights from Amazon, $130 for a 6-pack and honestly they put out pretty good light.

Electrician made it out and I is coming back. They still need to fill the garage panel, pop receptacles in and connect to the house panel, but everything is ran at least so I can start insulating Monday.

Wound up with a 100amp panel (will be run with a 70amp main breaker) for:
-2 switched outlets for the lights on a 20 amp
-5 Misc outlets scattered around on 2 20 amp breakers
-1 120v 20amp for what should be a narrow Halo lift, maybe a wildfire, undecided
-1 220v 20amp for my mini split

Going to start on rockwool for the walls while I'm off on Monday and see how far I get.

Well hyper fixated and knocked out the walls after work. Going to be honest I don’t think the Walmart clamps helped my already questionable ability to draw straight lines. Happy regardless! R15 rockwool in the walls, 3 inches of closed cell in the ceiling covered in dc315.

I still need to slap on outlet covers and put all the lights back up, but now I just wait for my mini split install.

Got hacky trying to insulate the man door this evening. I ran a rubber sweeper seal around all the sides and filled the cavity with rockwool that was too thick and tried to cover it up with some osb scraps I had. Definitely need to cut a singular piece and fix my switch hole, but the immediate draft is gone and framing in a real door shouldn’t be terrible this summer.IMG_7388.jpeg

Too late now, but I would have held the OSB on the walls up off the concrete by about 1/2" so it can't wick up moisture.
Fair callout, most panels are 1/4 inch off the floor, but the panels around the door are definitely not. I'm optimistic that running a mini split 24/7 will handle a lot of my moisture concerns, but worst case I'll be putting miles on my oscillating tool

If my OSB cuts were any indication that I’m not a carpenter I’m certainly not. Found a guy on FB marketplace who builds workbenches and just dropped off this 8ft made of hemlock. Much nicer than what I planned to build with OSB scraps!

Nice build. Seems like a fair price for the Mistubishi mini split install. Don't see a lot of G-wagons at the supply yard picking up insulation, lol. I wouldn't worry about the osb down to the floor. If it gets soft, run a skilsaw around the perimeter, then put a piece of PT or Azak as a baseboard molding on top of the osb. Or get more fancy and inset the azak baseboard, with a small chamfer on it for a similar baseboard. Do it tomorrow, or do it in 5 years, I wouldn't worry.

I have a 2017 G as well.

Another bucket list car acquired, and it's going to need plenty of love. After the boat sale I picked up I think the cheapest clean title manual coupe 996 in the country. Had to replace the steering column stalks right away and I'm debating if I want to tackle the IMS bearing on my own.

I also had the realization that I may want to do an in ground scissor lift to keep as much space as possible so the concrete guy will be back out.

Great thread - miss my G :(

Have to ask about the "Amish" build - didn't know "they" did garage builds...
I think they did a pretty solid job putting it together especially for the price. Originally I didn’t plan on full blow insulation and a mini split otherwise I might have done a couple of things differently, but it seems solid. I’m doing some rust mitigation on the G this weekend 😭

I did get a maxjax ordered as well!

Yours is a 2017? I had a 2018 - Florida truck so light living but never noticed anything on the chassis out of the ordinary.

Yep, it was in Kentucky it's whole life (belonged to the Willet family if you're into bourbon). 1 Winter in PA and it started rusting in the seam behind the gas door, I just dremeled out the seam, used some rust neutralizer and touch up paint. The undercarriage is still mint at least.

The theme of this weekend is mud, I had some landscapers come out and dig a drain, put up a gutter on the house side of the shop and my fiance helped me build a simple gravel walkway between the house and shop.

Between the conduit trenching this winter and drain digging this week our back yard is a wreck, hopefully we get a few dry days in a row so I can fix it and get a lot of grass seed down.

Finally getting some germination on the grass around the shop. We ripped up our whole front yard too so I'm looking forward to not having mud everywhere.

The MaxJax is already a dream come true and is making refreshing my 996 a dream. I've got new motor mounts showing up this week too that should be a breeze. Suspension on the G63 will be happening this summer.
