I bought a scrap door for £10.00

Fortunately it was silver. One step less in preparation.

600 grit preparation to create a decent surface for the paint to adhere to.

Some random pinstripe marking, various paint techniques including lace, fade and a repeating pattern ie fish scales.

I had planned on using my vintage airbrush gun, which I had never used before, to shade in the pinstripe lines. Unfortunately it failed so I have ordered another new gun.

Not sure if it will be capable of shading the way I want it.

In the meantime, a 3 minute video of what I did get done with just a bunch of rattle cans

Video

I think the result is pretty decent for using a sledgehammer to do fine dentistry.

Painting and tools update.

Bought two guns and a honeycomb stencil I was too lazy to create or make myself.

Small gun was silly cheap at under £10.00 If it works, great.
Also got a much more expensive airbrush gun with a traditional trigger.

Wednesday I repainted the Oldsmobile Roof in the sun, with a prayer because it went badly, due to the cold before.
looking at the pattern it went off in, there seems to be a message in there.

I also recovered the C-pillar from the previous damage.

Practiced some more on the door with a sunrise pattern in rattle can, no finesse.

And this morning I had to deliver my lawnmower to a repair guy because either the carb, jets or something else has gone bad over winter because it starts but won’t run now. I can’t be bothered to try fixing it this time.

On the way home I collected two lots of tools from Marketplace sellers.

Three spray guns for £10.00 of which I only want the centre one. Others available if anyone needs/wants them.

And another seller had an Estwing roofing hammer for £5.00 (collected for Craig in Shropshire who has a collection of different Estwings) Same seller had a £2.00 vintage saw setting iron that I bought for my display cabinet. My grandfather was a woodsman 90 years ago and I inherited his antique saw setting iron that they used for large two man saw teeth. The “set” is how the teeth lay and prevents binding up.

Cold and wet weather really isn’t helping at the moment.

I have a small collection of vintage US Made saws (mainly Waranted Superior, E.G Atkins co and SAW co (see examples below).

I also have two made in USA saw sets. Both have adjustable setting for TPI. In particular the Taintor MFG co has a dial and the newest engraved patent on the handle is amazingly 1892 (if you enlarge the last photo you can see the patent dates).

Sometime for fun, I use these saws and have used the saw sets to set the teach very easily and super fast.

Questioned elsewhere about cheap guns.

I bought three Marketplace paint guns, the middle one because the lid on my primer gun is fighting me.
I bought a new one already. But at £10.00 for the three, it was a no brainer for me.
I actually sprayed the silver on the Oldsmobile roof with my primer gun, because the expensive Devilbiss was not playing ball on the day.

I have found so far, with a bit of sensible use, these cheap guns deliver a good enough job.

Water dispersal on the roof after painting looked nice.

Now to figure out the Devilbiss gun because I want to use it.

As always, George makes me chuckle when I come up to the house. Sitting, waiting for me.

Bunch of little things.

I met a lovely lady a week ago.
Noooooo… !!! No romance, just nice and intelligent, she is a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who works NHS and has a private practice in Harley Street.

We have talked, texted a shitload.

Obviously I have shown her pcs of George.
She loves cats, but cannot keep one.

So I decided to make her one on Saturday.

Two hours of my time later, job done.

Went to meet her yesterday at a shopping centre to look at her daughter’s Audi A3 of which the rear windscreen wiper does not work.
Ordered a £23.00 OBD 2 reader.

Gave her the cat.

Later she sent a picture.

Result.

As usual you did a bang on job on the key chain. If you had not shown us what you started with (namely a fork), it would be very hard to ascertain this fact . Very creative.

Now to the more important matter 😉, what is wrong with these British ladies who can not seem to see a great catch?? :headscrat

I don’t know.

In this specific case, I think I know exactly what the problem is and I am happy to concur with her.

We met randomly in the Asda/Walmart chocolate aisle, and my pickup line spoken from diagonally behind her, was: “ I want to go where those are going” She looked over her shoulder as I pointed at a-box of Lindt chocolate and a tray of Ferrero Rocher chocolate. With a beaming smile she replied that I was welcome to do so. She had bought them for her kids as a reward, her son is in second year doing medicine and a daughter who has been offered a place at four med schools, is just finishing her final year at school.

So what would she see in me??

Apparently intelligence and humour.

I went on a rescue mission on Sunday (Same shop again, in the car park)
When we were done, she handed me a tray of Ferrero Rocher chocolate.

Life ehhh.

Had the Scenic washed yesterday.
It looks much better clean than in winter grubbiness.

I also tried another paint pattern.

I took some cardboard and cut small triangles out of it to create a saw tooth looking edge.

Like Fish scale techniques it looks different from different angles.

As commented by a couple of friends, pyramids…….

You decide.

Got the Oldsmobile out for some driving today Not actually taken it out since replacing the exhaust pipe

Bunch of small things done the last few days.

Been to the paint shop twice this week.

I bought more of those £1.20 cans of paint. A total of 10 this week. Some pretty colours that should work well for the lowrider style designs.

I also bought a liter of the silver that I had bought before. I need to repaint the roof, to keep myself happy. £72.00 includes three of the chap cans. Expensive lesson learned from the first 500ml that was £38.00 already.
Being the guy in charge means that I have to keep standards high.

I also collected a Marketplace purchase after the paint shop.

I paid £5.00 or $6.50 for this whole lot.

Mostly New, Unused and clearly came from somewhere that they bought in multiple sizes.

Over 100 drill bits in this lot, which means I paid around 5p per unit, regardless of size.

I would love to know what the retail price would be for that lot.
Obviously the value will vary substantially based on who is the manufacturer and what is the quality. But based on a rough guesstimate and even assuming that these are of Harbor Freight type quality, conservatively say 50p a piece! I would say you basically stole them.

Dormer and Cleveland drill bits are very good, industrial quality. Better that the more easily recognised brands like Bosch or Milwaukee and certainly miles ahead of anything that you would buy in any regular retail/diy outlet.

For example, the 7.5mm jobber length Cleveland:

Proper, serious engineering kit, priced accordingly.

Good morning Tom

Thank you for the information.

That shows that I may have bought a serious deal.

Once again, obviously not all will stay here.

I like sharing my “ fortune “ so I will share with people who need them.

Kindness

Sometimes it seems to be lacking these days.
Then you click a like on a picture posted for someone else, intended to just say “yes I like this, it’s a nice thing “

Followed by a tagging by the original poster to ask if I was interested in the item.
My intention was never to ask for it, but being who I am, means that a pocket knife would always draw my attention.
So I sent a PM to accept, offering to pay postage.
That done, @Tenmil Socket put it in the post for me, delivered today.

I opened the envelope and found, not just the knife, which was his grandfather’s, but also included, an Aston Martin DB6 model for my cabinet and a set of blue valve caps, having two blue cars, still to be decided.

So after finishing some more paint technique practice for the Oldsmobile lowrider inspired paint job, I headed into the woodwork shop to sharpen the three blades.

This knife can now cut.

Life is good ehhh ?

Apologies to everyone who knows what they’re doing

For those who are following with a macabre fascination in my continued investment in the Oldsmobile project…..

Thank you for watching and even more so for your comments That’s both of you 😉

So yesterday I tried out a few more “techniques” to get an idea of layered masking. One of the things when you look at lowrider paint, is the complexity of layers. This means layer upon layer of masking

First load of pictures shows my stash of 23 cans of paint At £1.20 each, quite an investment .
And some of the masking done

Few photos of the bits that I had done minus masking.
My favourite continues to be the continuous line or infinity line.
The problem as you will see is that the vinyl tape and cold, along with tight curves, doesn’t quite work.
But it works well for illustration of what I want.
with an airbrush gun the outcomes are very different.
I also used the new honeycomb stencil and a fade.
I like how it works.
And at £12.00 it’s an expensive piece of kit.

I used my Dewalt hot air gun all day to preheat the metal, dry the layers of paint.

Finally……..

It just wouldn’t be a good day in the garage if George didn’t come in to inspect everything and approve of my efforts and progress.

Of course there’s some space left on the door.

What next ??
