I have gone off the deep end with coffee like my craft beer in the last 3-4 years. I have always been a caffeine junky though. Used to drink 5 shot lattes in college. Kept a supply of a high caffeine soda called Bawls in the fridge back then too.

I have not tried full decaf but did buy some half and half blends to make in the late afternoons.

BAWLS!!!!!!! Man that takes me back haha

The decaf came from having blood pressure issues. my dr at the time thought was related to stress and my caffiene intake.

Coffee stouts are great. If you have never had it "gotta get up to get down" by wiseacre.

Haha yeah, that stuff was good. I just looked it up a minute ago and was surprised to see it is actually still around.

I have stopped having coffee before going to the Dr just so my blood pressure is normal.

Man, coffee stouts are a great thing. Will have to try that one. Burial Skillet and Griddle are my go to coffee stouts.

Coming from the ER , coffee is a way of life. I like a hot black coffee with a splash of vanilla, i used to limit myself to one a day, but now its usually just 1 because I got picky about my beans and cant make it at work. Coffee has also helped get me further away from all the sodas I used to drink, so theres some positivity there too.

There is a new coffee place that just opened up and has free drinks for the last week called 7brew. I stopped in twice Friday and had tried 2 different drinks. Someone told me all their drinks are espresso based, but I forgot to ask if thay was true. After the second drink I was feeling it for sure.

First project of the night tonight was flushing my tankless hot water heater. 20260302_180056.jpgtowel in the floor as usual because I took my hand off the discharge hose and it popped out of the bucket. Added some clamps to mitigate that issue. As soon as this is done, theres 2 cars awaiting diagnosis and I am mounting up new roadie tires on my bike. I still need to procure a few parts for the 11 speed swap , but hopefully I will get that done in the next few weeks.

I think when our water heater dies, I'm going that route. Do you use a white vinegar solution to flush it?
I use 6% vinegar and hot water. Let it rin for 30 minutes. Flush all the vinegar out with cold water and then pull the screen filter and clean it as well. I am supposed to do it on 1-1 every year. Been a bit busy and got begind but its done. We use an obscene amount of water here with my wifes hair salon so I try and keep the hot water heater in tiptop shape.

I got pics of my final measurements for my topper and got them sent in. I had to pull my fiberglass topper off to get it all measured. 20260303_181936.jpg20260303_180342.jpg20260303_182027.jpg
With all of those done and sent in they did send me a rough idea of how the whole setup looks on an 8ft topper. I was really excited to see this pic as it gives a good idea of how it will look with a longer topper. Allcthe other pics I see are on short bed trucks or gladiators. picture.png
I have scraped down all my joints except the last couple of joints under the boat. Its already much nicer when I sweep the shop.

My weld washers showed up. Ended up not being needed, but I see enough jeeps come thru here that I have confidence they will get used. 20260303_213255.jpg

I started my love of the coffee flavor from a weird place, coffee flavored ice cream, that my grandmother would always have in the freezer. Then progressed into stronger and stronger.
I've found that I can tolerate coffee when it's something like that where the coffee is a background flavor and isn't overpowering. Such as Tiramisu as long as I don't get a lot of the lady finger in the serving. I know my Dad started drinking coffee from lack of options on the drilling rig and eventually started drinking Folger coffee everyday by the pot full. I enjoy the smell of coffee, but the taste is so different then the smell to me.

Congrats on the topper, looking forward to seeing that when it arrives!
Thanks Mike!
Getting that topper ordered is exciting. That is going to be an awesome space for your trips.
I am looking forward to getting good use out of this!

Measurements were sent back from the manufacturer and I just need to verify them against my truck and then finalize the order. Once its all finalized, its a 30% down payment and a waiting game. I have to say I have been impressed with the speed of responses and service. I also found a code that gave me two add on items for free from a late night Youtube video I was watching about a guy who just went through this same process and documented it all.

That topper looks like the perfect setup for bed camping and also pulling a boat! When is the delivery date?

I hear ya on the ease of sweeping after the joints are filled. It’s well worth it!

Supposedly late May for delivery, I am having it delivered to a local Vermeer dealer my buddy runs so it can be offloaded with a forklift. If its truly here by that timeframe that puts it here in time for my June canoe trip which would be perfect timing. I did order it with cross bars for my canoe as well.
Extra freebies is a nice bonus.
Agreed! I used the coupon code for an exterior molle panel for gear as well as rails that use these cool locking clips. We use them in ambulances and I like the way they can be used to mount gear so it seemed like a good addition. Especially when its free!

One thing I did not realize until after ordering my setup was that there are interior panels as well to secure gear to. Screenshot_20260305_083345_DuckDuckGo.jpg
They sent an installation video last night after I placed my deposit and I got excited when I saw the interior panels attached to the doors are included. I have plenty of room for storage, but more is always better!

Buried in customer work and this is Jeff's weekend to work at the dealer so I jumped in and got after it. Early start with some uninvited visitors 20260307_072813.jpg20260307_072835.jpg
This crew of 6 is all over the place here lately. Up to no good I assume.

Made a quick run to get rid of scrap metal and cardboard. My copilot had to stop get a pup cup this morning 20260307_080118.jpg
And after all these distractions we were finally able to get started. I had a crv dropped off with some oil leaks. Typical K series leaks from the valve cover and Vtec solenoid, 20260307_100230.jpg20260307_100923.jpg
With the valve cover off its so much easier to access the Vtec solenoid. 20260307_101706.jpg
Old gasket out and new one in place and back together nice and easy. Quick oil change, and a lot of cleaning and its good to go. Then I heard an awful racket from the passenger wheel. Tpms sensor must be broken as I can hear something tumbling around inside. Not much I can do for that problem.

Calling it a day for the shop. Plans are to relax and spend the day being a burrito factory for the wife as I make her a million breakfast burritos, relax and wait for the rain to come.

Been absolutely slammed this past week! Jeef took off a week from work for Spring break so he has been busy over here and bringing his son to hang with my kids. The last couple of weeks my Autel has been giving me some issues and I was getting tired of messing with it. I went ahead and ordered a new scanner from my parts guy. It showed up today and just in time. 20260311_203451.jpg20260311_165536.jpgThis is the Autel TS900. Its wireless which I am really liking, and it worked right away on a land rover I have had issues with getting to read. This tool also does a ton of tpms programming which isnt super beneficial to me, but is good to have. I lookong forward to testing some of the tools new capabilities on some upcoming cars.

I have the Autel MS906ProTS and really like it. It connects relatively quick to the vehicle and I can watch more than 4 PID's at a time compared to my Snap-on Modis Ultra. I still like my Modis Ultra, but I seem to be reaching for the Autel more and more lately. I like the cordless option, especially on the last couple of transmission services where I can monitor transmission temperature while the vehicle is in the air running and I am filling at a certain temperature. I've only used the TPMS programming one time and that was on my Fifth Gen Camaro. It worked great but I didn't necessarily go searching for one with TPMS capabilities, but glad I had those abilities.

This tool is marketed as a 3 in 1 with TPMS and diagnostics etc. Advance auto parts where I have my commercial account with has a diagnostic scan tool rep who is very deep into the Autel ecosystem, and this was his suggestion within my budget range. I had good luck out of my old Autel and hope this one does even better. I was not searching for one with Tpms capabilities either and when I saw the packaging I was worried this might not be what I needed, but it still does all the diagnostic things as well. I ran into Chrysler security gateway for the first time last week and this tool works with that so I hope that it can do all I need for awhile.

I also like that it has coding abilities as so many components these days need to be coded to the specific vehicle, whereas my old Modis Ultra does not. I do wish mine had scope capabilities, but I still have my Modis Ultra which is a decent scope and I have my old Snap-on Vantage graphing multimeter as well as an AES UScope for those times when one channel is sufficient.

Scope is on the list too to pick up. A tool I avoided like the plague as a flat rate mechanic, but I feel can be indispensable now as I have gotten older and want to know, not just swap parts.

Adding a scope to your arsenal will be a gamechanger. I keep thinking an 8-channel Pico would be nice, but just can't bring myself to laying that much $$$$ out for another scope. Granted there are a few times when more than two channels would be nice, but not really necessary the vast majority of the time. I would say 80% of the time I need to use my scope I only end up using one channel, seldom do I actually use 2-channels.

I'm sure there will be people jump on stating you need the 4 or 8 channels, but I think you have to look at your work envelope and make that determination for yourself. IF all you want to do is scope work and diagnostics, then yes, splurge for the big daddy Pico and don't look back. However, if you are like me and enjoy working on many more things than just diagnostics and looking at a screen and wave patterns, then a 2-channel will be more than adequate.

Just my .02 worth of opinion.

When do you get to sleep with all that is going on?
Well currently, Im out here working on a Honda, when Jeff is here working I get family time plus I run back and forth and help diag, find parts and labor and sell the work we do. When hes not here and theres jobs to do, I either get up before the sun and do it or come out after my wife heads to bed. All that to say, I still hit the sack at a decent hour and get enough rest to feel like a 40 year old when I wake up hurting from being in bed too long 😅.

Honda pilot in tonight for valve cover gaskets and a valve adjustment. 20260313_210131.jpg20260313_210146.jpg
Once the cover and intake plenum are out of the way, the biggest holdup is the wiring harnesses which run over top of the valve covers. 20260313_211738.jpg
They dont give much room to slip the covers in and out. I take them loose from all connectors and slip the harnesses off of their metal brackets to give myself as much room as possible. Once the covers are out, I pull it to tdc on cylinder 1 and start my adjustment. Been using this Bluepoint tool for 22 years to do these adjustments. One of the first tool truck purchases I had ever made. 20260313_221029.jpg
Spin it around and the cams have each cylinder numbered for ease of maintenance. I checked each cylinder and for an suv with 180k on it they were almost all in spec. Intakes were a bit loose, exhausts were perfect. What I have seen over the years is the exhaust valves tighten up over time and end up causing misfires once warm. Since the owner wanted the valve covers done I sold him on this as it doesnt take but an extra hour or so to do and its piece of mind. Leaving it for now and will button it up in the morning.

Knocked out the reinstalling of the covers this morning after refreshing them with new spark plug tube seals and valve cover gaskets and bolt grommets.20260314_072403.jpg
Once it was all back together, it got a thorough test drive and I jumped into the next car, 4 wheel brakes on a crv. Once that gem was done, I decided to go ahead and do the first mow of the season. I pulled the mower out, blew off the deck, greased all the zerks and gassed up. Got after it and got the front yard mowed, broke out the trimmer and the new Stihl BR 800 blower and finished the front yard up. I will be the first to say that my yard is rough, uneven and definitely not a show piece like some on here 20260314_131627.jpg20260314_131630.jpg
With it all cut and even though it does make me feel better than splotchy grass. I left the backyard so I can do some clean up back there before I go after mowing it. Once I get the first mow out of thw way I will pull the blades and sharpen and balance them. The rest of my day will be attempting to relax with the wife, but I know she wants me to hang curtains which also includes me ironing all the pleats as well. So much for relaxing........

Saturday night the boys asked for a truck campout in the back yard last minute. Hard to say no to them so I grabbed the mattress, they got blankets and pillows and I pulled the truck around back and set it up. I wasnt thinkingnit would be too cold so I skipped the diesel heater, wish I hadnt. It got down to 45 or so, not terrible but was still chilly in there. 0600 came and I crawled out to start another early morning project. 20260315_081606.jpg
We got up and made some cinnamon rolls amd dropped these 2 pork butts on the egg to smoke. I went by Home depot trying to find some coast lights on clearance and found a couple but not at the smoking deals others are getting them for. 20260315_121657.jpg Ever since my beloved streamlight disappeared, I have been on the hunt for a suitable replacement. These seem to be bright enough, will see how they do. The kids spring break was last week, and one day we ended up with 5 boys over here playing and hanging out. The wife brought up how our older son wants a space away from his younger brother which prompted her to get on me about finishing the room above the salon. I had told her stepdad about it and he showed up yesterday with poplar casings he made for the windows and door in there. We cut them to size and glued and clamped them up, then took them inside to install them. 20260315_152747.jpgThe wood river corner clamps were really cool. They do puncture the wood to hold it, but made for a super strong corner that turned out perfect. The polar turned out nice I kinda like the contrast on the wall, but I just need to fill the nail holes and prime and paint.
with this space so close to being done, we are looking for some cabinets for a tiny kitchenette up there. I have my freeze dryer which I want to move in there, and having a countertop to prep foods on when they go into or out of the dryer would be nice. Once everything gets painted, I have just a few pieces of trim remaining to finish up and we cut out for an attic access door in behind the knee wall. Little bit of sheetrock work there, my gun safes need to find a permanent home up there as well. They are just sticking out from the walls currently. Still working on curtains as well for the wife. It takes about 20-30 minutes per curtain to get them all ironed out.My youngest started a ton of seeds to try and grow some peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, sunflowers and basil this weekend , hopefully those will take off but of course the westher is going to **** after multiple 70 degree days. I got a lot accomplished this weekend, with lots more to go. Hopefully the weather calms down this week and I can get the rest of the property cleaned up and ready for spring.

I hear ya, I was in short sleeve shirt yesterday moving stuff outside.
I’m watching it snow right now with a possible 1” or more of snow during the night. I don’t think it will stick since the ground is so warm.

Good news is its already gone. Bad news it is gonna be 26 degrees tonight. The snow was so heavy it was blocking my radar cruise on the interstate this afternoon. Had to drive myself home usong the gas pedal like it was 1995. Once all this cold weather clears its supposed to be 80 this weekend, so I can look forward to that.

I was wrong, it stuck and when the temp dropped it froze so there's a nice sheet of ice everywhere.

Such a tragedy :)

Bummed we didn't get a dusting of snow over here. Just tons of wind and rain.

Mike, which Vantage do you have? I hung onto an original MT2400 so that I’d have some basic ability to look at stuff but it’s not a true lab scope. Better than nothing… barely!

Same here Sterling. I kept my old Vantage MT2400 as that was the first graphing multimeter I purchased way back in the late 90's, much before oscilloscopes were a thing. I liked the premise behind having a VOM that would graph over time for trying to spot glitches and such.

I also have a 2-channel OTC scope and a Snap-on Modis Ultra that has served me well as a scanner and 2-channel scope, but at times I still reach for my trusty old standby the Snap-on MT2400 if I'm just looking at a simple circuit and looking for glitches. That Volvo was a perfect opportunity for me to use the old Vantage graphing multimeter to watch while jiggling and moving wires and connections around.
