Is there a way to test a jump pack?

Just ordered a new jump pack, a JNC660. Just wondering if there is a way to test and make sure it works instead of waiting until I need it to see if it works! Can I unhook a battery and clamp the jump pack to the car's battery wires and try to start the car?

Sure just remove the terminals from the battery and put the booster pack on them. You can also test voltage with a multimeter.

Clamp the pos cable to a piece of metal, and clamp a stick of 6011 to the neg and see if it will weld! :bounce:

I tested with meter and it's at 12.94, that's without charging it yet. But that doesn't really say much about how much actual power it has.

Unfortunately I don't have a load tester like a carbon pile.

Out of curiosity why is it a bad idea to hook the jump pack up to the battery cables to start the vehicle?

That's good to hear. I did a fair amount of research before buying it and it had the most CCAs for the price. I'm sure it works fine, just thought if there was a simple way to test it out I would. Hate to wait until I need it and then have it not work.

Well, you could leave the accessories in a vehicle on till the battery dies, and see if it'll jum start it... :dunno:

  1. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay.
  2. Attach a memory keeper; http://tinyurl.com/kpyawem*
  3. Remove the negative battery cable.
  4. Attach the positive cable from the jump pack to the positive terminal of the battery.
  5. Attach negative cable from the jump pack to the end of negative cable.
  6. Crank the engine for 30 seconds, while monitoring the voltage with a DMM.

Load test with a tester. I don't agree with unhooking a terminal.

Why not ? Gathered from the question asked, if you want to test the power pack and the vehicles battery is not drained thd only way would be to disconnect terminals from the battery and connect the power pack to them then start it up. You cant get a better load test than a real life scenario......

Torqueman's got it spot on.

We have a a jnc950 just keep it charged and you should never ever have to worry about it even when it real low it will still turn a thing over we use it on every thing

They are by far the best jump pack on the market tough as nails and you can even rebuild them ( new batteries longer wires new clamps ) over 3 years of regular use and still going strong

awesome investment highly recommended

Just charge it till the light goes green and wait till you need it. Charge it 90 days from now if you don't get to use it. they can email you reminders if you like. Hey I look at it like this if you bought it and don't have to use it good for you. It's like having a drawer of extractors if you never have to use one.... good times.

I always think my wife, Julie, is a spendthrift.
She sits on the internet at work and orders lots of junk.
She claims she does a lot of research before each purchase...

So this discussion, and others on GJ, got me curious about the jump pack she bought.

Guess which one it is?

It looks just like this:

Guess I won't be able to second guess her any more!

BTW, it works great. And we use it a lot.

An auto parts place (like AutoZone) might be able to load test it for you and print out the results. If they do it might depend upon how busy or how helpful they want to be.

Well I'm hooping not to have to use it a lot. Just leave your lights on a lot to kill the battery?

How much was it?

Got it from amazon for about 130 shipped. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JFJLP6/?tag=atomicindus08-20.

That was about the most I wanted to spend for as little as I will use it, or at least I'm hoping not to have to use it a lot! But also didn't want some 40 dollar POS that wouldn't work when I needed it. From my searching this this was the price range where you get a quality jump pack but not too expensive, the best bang for your buck.

Had a chance to "test" it today, or more so use it. Had a buddy with a car that's been sitting forever dead. Hooked the jump pack up and it fired right up. Charged it back up and it will be waiting for the next time I need a jump!

I would test it by clipping on the leads to my Solar BA5 battery tester and setting it on AGM.

I bought the 950 and used it one time, always charged it as directed, now nothing, shows in green, guess it not holding a charge.
I contacted Clores and basically they said it was out of warranty (purchased 14 mos), they would not even give me any help.
Very disappointed with "Clores'.
