I talked myself into buying the Icon 1/4 and 3/8 sockets sets but the ratchets look like ****

These sets are on sale and have the foam, Don't know why I needed them. But they seem very nice and I like the foam. The cases are even nice. They were 35% off. i found out the ratchets are Gen1
But both ratchets were dirty locking so I wiped them down but the 1/4" looks like it has pitting on the back where it says Icon, probably poorly finished. I hit it with Flitz and no change.
On the 3/8 it had a scratch and was dirty, so I polished it and the scratch pretty much went away and it cleaned up except where it says Icon on the back it has a like brown or copper stain, which I think means the chrome didn't stay on?
I wonder if they would switch them out?

HF around here doesn't really look at the tools you return, you just go grab a new one off the shelf, walk up to the register hand them the new one along with your old one, say it's defective, and away you go. They often keep the packaging.

The real question is will they have the identical G1 ratchet in stock to swap out.

Wait another six months and the G1's will probably be completely gone and they will likely just swap it out for a G2.

But I agree... I think the G1 ratchets are junk, but the G2's are actually kind of awesome.

I noticed yesterday that the metal finish on the icon ratchets starting to look pretty rough so maybe they’re making cheaper

Still one of the best games in town pricewise so sure why not make them cheaper?

I would definitely return the pieces that have the chrome flaking off

I was wondering if you would have to bring the whole set back or just the ratchets? Would they just pull from the ratchet stock or from the set?

They'll pull from another set if needed. You only return the defective item. The set they pull the replacement from will then go to their clearance section.

Warranty it and pay the price difference to get a G2. The G1 ratchets felt pretty nice when they replaced my Craftsman RP but then I got some G2s and Dual80s that blew them out of the water.

I love the Icon kits to grab for jobs but EVERY time I try to use the included ratchet it lets me down. The accidental direction switch trick makes them useless to me. I’ve picked up two cases recently that had the Icon sockets switched for craftsman so I’m going to modify the foam to fit my Dual 80 flex head.

Pictures didn't really show up, the bad part on the 3/8 looked like a shadow in the picture I took.
Doesn't matter I got there and got them exchanged. Almost got a flexhead on the 3/8, but they found a regular one....
I do think they were new in box with some signs of shipping wear. It might of been beer thirty in Taiwan on the day it was made.

Not always the case. I bought a Snap on 1/4 air ratchet(off the truck at work for about $200 in 08) it **** the bed in less than 2 months(they wanted $80 for parts to repair and 3 month lead time. This was with a great rep that I knew for years. It was the company policy not his), bought a Mac to replace that. Lasted less than a year, replaced that with a stubby Matco and that one’s still going strong. Also bought some S/O deep-tall vise grips. ******* trash. My Irwin’s that I got from a box store are 1000 times better.
You don’t always get what you pay for and just because it says Snap On or some other respectable name doesn’t always equal greatness.
