After some more tyre/tyre kicking I eventually picked up all my rolls of tape.
Masking tape, J-tape and 3mm or 1/8” 3M tape, sharpie, retractable mini Stanley, super scissors and a fist full of ambition.

Pics will show to process of edge masking, centre finding, then the part that will have 80% or more of you up in arms…….

Yup.

I don’t expect this to be popular.

But

My Circus, My Monkeys.

After three weeks on this thing, the three step, two step boogie has been committed to muscle memory. Maybe I should also be committed ehhh ?

Because of the shape of the front end, I decided to try using a pattern that includes the front grille to right above the front bumper.

So we have 1” 1/4” and 1/8” lines masked off that will come back as silver when unmasked.

Next step would be to decide how to split the two side panels, keeping in mind the curves on all planes that affect what you would ultimately see.

I had isolated the large centre panel and have no clue what it would look like in the end.

Pictures.

Quick question to those who are skilled at street fighting or playing dirty.

Do I even respond or reply to this guy??

From those pictures that's about $1999 too much for that. Not being a jerk, but it looks like it's in horrible shape.
maybe respond saying that, just for him, you'll adjust the price for IT (Idiot Tax) and it's now 50% more

😉

No reply is the best reply to people like that. Bummer the silver pulled up on you when masking. Are the people at the paint supply getting to know you by name? Around here they would think you were huffing all that paint.

JB

They offered me counselling.

I am definitely headed towards $500 in paint.

a video we really really really really don't need to see, so that's saved you some time :ROFLMAO:

Totally

We told you.......

Don't feed the animals. But did you listen?!?! Nooooooooooooooo......

Back to our regularly scheduled content.

Guilty.

I don’t think I can offer much on the hood other than it’s going to be amazing and polarizing. 🍻

Polarising is good.

Shows people are thinking.

Design.

Not as easy as just turning over a new page.

Not just a matter of tossing a cup or bucket of paint at or over the car.

And for me at least, it doesn’t come easy all the time. This last week I was struggling with “writers block” trying to create designs that would continue the theme for the car.

One of my favourite stencils is the hexagonal one that I used on the trunk/boot lid.
But it was not fit for purpose.
So I spent quite a bit of time modifying it in a way that it would be useable.

I had also bought a load of stencils from “The Range” in their hobby section.
Plan is to try cut some of them up, modify some and see of they bring some creativity.

There are things that influence the outcome, including human error. So I have discovered masking, striping errors even with the paint in hand.

This week I was painting, only to realise that I had not masked an adjacent panel.

Much swearing and a small prayer, followed by a panel wipe down with thinners, hoping it would not disturb existing masking or paint.

Stencils including the hexagon before and after.

Just block him and forget him. You have more important things to do.

I have no input on your design or how to paint, I am enjoying the story so far. And after following you for some years I trust the end result will both be interesting and nice.

Thank you.

Perfect response and reply.

I am hoping that I will be happy with the final reveal.

I have not seen it in much more than sections

Another thing that I have noticed…..

How much paint I have flung at this car.

Despite being reasonably ( debatable ) sensible or frugal ( OK, I lost control ) I already have possibly just over £500.00 into paint, rattle cans and 7.5 liters of clear lacquer.

Obviously I cannot walk away from this project ( Mission creep ? )

It’s pushing up the total cost of the car up all the time.

Value ??

I have obviously bought the silver to create a base to work on.

In the meantime I have bought a liter of Pearl blue metallic for the bottom third including the rubbing strips and bumpers.

This week on Monday I have also added a liter of some gorgeous Gold paint.

I am hoping to use some Gold today.

Yesterday I also used a lovely metallic colour called Stratosphere.

Looking great so far.
On the expenditure/cost issue - don’t forget, the value of a piece of art is not simply a time and materials equation.

100%

Not sure about art, but therapy….. 😉

It makes you happy!

Its not that special, but maybe it will work.

Silver is the base coat I am working on to of right now.

Blue will be the cars DVLA registered color.

Gold……… Wheels.

Pic below 😉

💯 :+1:

Same here, in fact I am very much enjoying seeing the experimentation and learning a lot in the process.

You are doing great and thank you for sharing all the details.

Thank you for your continued support and comments, I really appreciate it when guys chat and comment on here.

Experimentation for sure.

Of course cockups are included.

There are places where I actually have 5 coats of colour now.

Starting on the bonnet/hood.

I bought quite a few stencils

There are things that would work in your head.

Of course my head doesn’t always work in a conventional way.

So much laying out, moving around and walking back and forth, coffees and returning to look again.

You can repaint over and over till you get what you want.

I have actually done up to 5 coats in places.

Good morning!
A bit late, but I just had the thought that it would be far more easy to do this "experiment"(which I really enjoy following) in the summer?! However, advantage now is that there is a lot less dust in the air ;-)
Thom

Morning Thom

I am kinda impatient.

Also, the C10 restoration is waiting for warmer weather so I can get on with it.

Filler and paint doesn’t like cold weather.

This car, with its sections can be done using my trusty 2000W Dewalt heat gun to heat panels, and dry paint the moment it goes down.

I actually hit writers block with the bonnets panel design for a few days.
Mentioned before.

So getting to decide a colour, and what to add to what panel was interesting.

Signal red.

Modified Hexagon stencil.

Much masking up and eventually.

Paint.

I added some of the cutouts from the original stencil to create a slightly different look.

Probably lost on the majority of people.

That is the fun part of the journey. Say you were a pro who had done 100s of such projects and already knew exactly what works and could finish the project in one day! Then what ? That would be just a routine job! And a job generally is not as much fun as when one does the same job as a hobby! Strange but true, it is just how human psyche works.

Could the colours represent Spain, lowrider culture?

Dunno…..

Here we go.

Two stepped forward and Three steps back.

Next panel was a bit of a challenge.

I bet 85% of you have no real clue on Oldsmobile logos and ambitions.

See evolution of logos below.

So I tried to figure a way to incorporate or honour the flight, wings, whatever you want to call it…….

And failed.

Dismally.

Created a large, 800mm stencil to mimic a wing and feathers in flight.

I think it came out perfectly

As an example of what not to do here.

Mate @pauly messaged me from his deathbed saying something about reinventing the wheel.

I told him his fever was clearly high because this was a wing, not wheel.

And boy, how we laughed.

I also did some practice runs that resemble a pineapple crown.

Adding the blue base to the hood/bonnet, I had to add a section of railway line to hold it down so that the lines would all be on the same level.

The hood cannot close fully because of the old sheets and masking inside the engine bay.

Whatcha think so far?

Shite weather.

It seems like we will get your weather here in Sweden in a couple of days. Come some snow this night, but it did not stay.

So watching David Freiburger on YouTube.

George waiting for more treats.

Fool.

Are you sure he is not Garfields brother? Seems like he finished the coffee and needs one more.

Lack of reaction to the blue paint…..,
Could it be Easter absences of the usual suspects?
Shocked out of your religion?
Waiting to see what next

Try as I might, the wings or nod to the Oldsmobile logo just didn’t get to take off.

So in chatting with @pauly he suggested keeping to traditional methods and not trying to reinvent the wheel.

Of course we know where we would be if we hadn’t invented the wheel.

So I went back to another of my favourite stencils and added some very traditional fish scales.

Using a colour called Stratosphere, the metallic is dark and broody, however, put it in the sunlight and it spring to life.

The drop off onto the grille was initially done in part, but it reminded me of a comb or rainbow. So I filled the bottom of it up as well in Stratosphere.

Better.

This to me was quite a relief as I was struggling to het these panels filled with designs that contradicted each other but would form part of my vision.

More later if you guys get back 😉

I like both the color and pattern. Not for my car, but I could use something like that for my garage door or as an accent indoors.

Could it be Easter absences of the usual suspects?
Shocked out of your religion?

All of above?
