The fun fairs are amazing, still quite a few steam ones running. Some of the rides had their own steam engine to power them like the gallopers. Others ran of the two large generators on on top of the boiler. Showman's engines are truly the most beautiful prices of machinery you could build, they absolutely gleam and are far bigger than that picture makes them look.

If the Dorset steam fair still happening? Their web site no longer exists.

It is having a break although like likely for good. It got to big and expensive to run and I think there was a bit of a disagreement. Welland is the big one now. Not as big as Dorset but none of the tat stands.

Any ideas guys? Weird tools repurposed? How would you get this thing in the air?
Any afficionado clubs nearby?

No location on your profile that I see but in my town we have a company that runs an old steam train and a large group of volunteers that find and restore train cars on the side rails as a hobby.

Other than that, I'm with most everyone else. Steel plates under several large bottle jacks, and cribbing. Make sure your jack points are solid. Large bottle jacks go for a song at some auctions.

Good luck with it, I'm thoroughly impressed!

local vintage tractor or thresher club, maybe even the local FFA chapter or similar may help you find others of like mind with a yearning for steam powered heavy stuff.

I’m back.

Chatted with the boys over at Smokstak, and they’re confident I can do everything I need with 2 tons of lifting. Home Depot sells one for $1200 or so (link removed, it wasn’t working). It’s a junky import crane, but I’m not using this daily. I could get a decent 2ton chain fall for $100 and we’re off to the races. Any experience with these cheap-o gantry cranes? Would I be better off welding my own?

I have a 2-ton gantry crane on wheels I use in my shop. It has telescoping sides so I can raise and lower it if needed. I use a 2-ton chain hoist on it. I got mine off of amazon. Check the width on it, though. I discovered after getting it it's not wide enough to go around the wheel wells on my trailer. Whatever I'm taking off has to be wobbled to the back of the trailer before I can lift it. Made getting my mill off the trailer interesting.
