Hello,

I've been lurking around for a while and impressed with the knowledge here. Thanks for letting me join.

I have an opportunity to pick up a Emglo L3B-80 Compressor. Was told by the gentleman its around a 1980 model and these unites are known to be "Bulletproof"? I was also told it doesn't have that many hours on it. Looks to be in pretty good shape... Can I get your thoughts on this compressor or if I should run from it? He wants $800 for it. Anything I should pay attention to or look for?

Thanks a bunch!
Ron

I wouldn't say its any better than any other compressor. I feel like $800 is on the high side. I would certainly check the oil in the compressor to see if its ever been changed. If not, walk away.

I had the 2 cylinder model for a few years. 1 1/2HP. It had the constant-run feature but I made it so I could select constant-run or start-stop.

Overall, not a bad unit but if it ran continuously above 120PSI or so, the oil would solidify on the discharge valves and would need to be cleaned.

Not positive but I think they are Jenny brand now.

"L" series pumps are pretty old, not sure of current parts availability. They usually are rated around 20-22 cfm with a 3hp motor.

I have an Emglo 2 stage 4 cylinder gas powered portable compressor, it's a quality piece of equipment. I paid $350 for it used in 2014. I rebuilt the compressor a couple of years ago when the crankshaft broke, it was originally from by a duct cleaning company and no doubt run hard. With the small tanks it can go from 0-165 psi in about 45 seconds yet with 15.5 cfm it can still keep up with my blast cabinet. I chose gas powered because my detached garage has no electricity, the portability has come in handy several times.

If you have inspection camera I'd ask to pull those bung plugs to check out condition of tank. Alternatively see if you can inspect bottom particularly near welds to see any signs of rust or deterioration. Hit it with ball peen hammer and listen for obvious changes in pitch or any flat sounding areas on bottom. Almost 50 years old not sure of your requirements but can probably pick up a new 60 gal for same ballpark.

ETA just for reference asking $375 obo claims just needs magnetic starter switch...

Maybe call Jenny and ask them about that pump parts availability? https://www.jennyproductsinc.com/pumps.html

I have an older Emglo (now Jenny) 2HP 18 gallon compressor I bought a while back with the K pump. I've used it hard and it was well worn when I bought it. It developed an issue where the valve came apart and a little piece got stuck on the check valve. I took it apart and the piston was a bit chewed up (had metal transfer on the skirt) and the valve plate was also a little dinged. I ordered a new piston/rings and valves and put it back together and it's working again.

I like these Jenny/Emglo units.

I have an Emglo and it has been a fantastic compressor. They are still in business under the Jenny brand. Their support is excellent. When I had a question I called in and wound up speaking to the gentleman who built my machine.
