More like 'IN and ON' my garage.

Installed the new horse weathervane today. I decided to cut off 4" from the large rod to lower it a bit. Did that with a hacksaw and file then partially assembled some of it in the garage.

Took a bit of time to set up the ladder and get everything up on the roof but once up there I had it all installed in about a half-hour. I used a small novelty compass to set the brass letters pointing in the correct Northernly direction.

Bit hard on the old knees and back side. Hardest part was the transition from the ladder to the roof and vice-versa. Not bad for 71. Of course the wife was worried I'd fall off. Ha.Ha.

Took a couple pics, which really doesn't do the weathervane justice. Looks really good from the ground. Nice breezy day today so its working just fine.

The neighbor asked me why we chose a horse. I explained to her that First, NJ is one of the largest horse owner states in the U.S. Secondly, this is the 'Year of the Horse' on the Chinese Calendar. Thirdly, its a little nod to my Harley 'Iron Horses' in the garage/shop and of course we really like horses.

Kind of hard to see the tree for the other trees, but I'm getting started. That one is about half done. Getting tools tuned up and muscles I haven't used in a while warmed up. Tree pruning is a different kind of workout. Three-and-a-half trees to go.

A while back the high beam dimmer switch went bad in the wife's wagon, headlights work but when you click high beam the lights turn off. Attempted to replace the switch today but was not prepared to have to disassemble half the dash to actually be able to get to the damn switch! So that will be a project for another time...

While poking around originally to see what was going on with the headlights I discovered the car has a dealer installed remote entry system!
We never got remotes when we bought the car. We bought the car from an old lady, it was her husbands car and he had passed about 14 years prior.
In searching for info about the system and to see if remotes were still available I found someone selling a complete new in box system, only one remote but otherwise complete with all wiring and paperwork. I did find a remote or two on eBay but for really stupid money!


Today I was able to pair the 'new' remote with the system in the car and new we have remote lock/unlock!

Had a slight hiccup with the system when I went to drop the car backoff for my wife. Seems the programming button got stuck in the on position, so when I started driving, every so often the door locks would cycle that the system was in program mode! I had only done the programming and didn't run/drive the car so I thought it was all set to go.

After she got home I was able to gently pry the button up and all seems to be good now.

It worked well. The old catch pan, which was waaaaaaay too small, is now the catch can so it doesn’t splash all over.


Then Miss Lily and I troubleshoot why the cameras on the truck were not working and narrowed it down to somefuckingwhere in this rats nest. Oh. My. Gawd. I am tempted to drive to central ND and smack the previous owner in the back of the head and drive home. What a *********** !!


I sure do like this truck though. It needs a few minor things and it’ll be on the road again. A new set of Firestone Logging tires are on the list for this year. All kinds of traction will be mine soon !!

Love the wire nuts and the speaker wire. Are there any ScotchLocks in the mix?

Put some pliers racks in my USG toolbox, my pliers drawer had become piled high with pliers such that the drawer barely closed. My drawer is only about 2-3/4" high so most of my pliers needed to be tilted over to allow the drawer to close. I found a rack design for 3D printing that was tilted at 45* with 6 spaces, I made 2 racks then mirrored the model for 2 more racks. Now I have 12 spaces on each side of the drawer plus extra space for pliers that won't fit in the racks to lay flat. The drawer closes with no problem.

Yesterday - flipped the calendar over to April, hung a shadow box I put together with some old patches gathering dust in a drawer, then finished installing hooks on a couple of key racks and cap rack I made for a relative.

I'm clearing the way so I can go at least one body length higher. With my back still pretty screwed up, handling my 12' ladder isn't going to happen. Climbing is less painful--as long as I can stay up there.

Wind gusts of over 25 mph kicked up shortly after the picture, making my perch too precarious to continue. Hopefully, it'll be calm in the AM.

Replaced the center drive shaft bearing. Had to remove the exhaust pipes to gain access. Make sure you have good drill bits when dealing with old exhaust flange bolts and nuts.

Recently realized I'm giving up a lot of space to tools I don't use. I noted the last time the mill head was trammed was 2019. It made a few objects during the last administration, but nothing since. When working on the trike project with the grandson, I vended out the shortening of the axle, $150 and a week later it was complete. I have a shop around the corner that welds and sandblasts, another 30 minutes away to do machining. Between the trike and the Baja, I did zero machine work, so it's time to send them away.

Bridgeport is older j head, 3 phase, works could use some love, no dro or powerfeed, when I purchased it it had the old style powerfeed and dro in milk crates, they remain there. Lots of tooling acquired over the years.

South Bend is a 13", 3 phase, collet and chuck tooling, taper attachment, quick change tool post, very good shape, again excess tooling to boot.

As for tooling I have the HF 5 drawer mechanics cart packed, some new and some used. A lot acquired when I was working and buying out retirees stuff, so plenty of jigs and fixturing equipment.

A phase converter exists so they work in my shop.

Joining them in departing the shop will be a kalamazoo a7 horizontal band saw, tombstone welder and a wire feed machine.

My kids will be glad they don't have to deal with the detritus of the dead, when it happens.

My urge to fabricate and do project work still exist, but time marches on. Seldom am I working on anything anymore that requires immediacy. And I find it easier to send it out for fabrication.

In the shop today I walked in checked a couple computers to insure the HD's had been removed so they could be recycled. It turned cold again so I did not stay long. Picked up and cleaned up.

Found time to clean the garage a little. Looked like a bomb went off in there. Kitchen remodel, recycling overflow, hockey equipment for myself and 2 kids everywhere . Still gotta wash all the hockey equipment and hang dry, but it's start. My daughter turns 10 on Saturday and she wants to have a family get together in the garage. A good kid who doesn't ask for much wants to spend time in the garage? Who am I to say no.

After owning and using one of the above for a year now, I can state that I positively despise the trigger lock mechanism on it. It had to have been designed and approved by the spawn of Satan himself. Every - EVERY - time I try to squeeze the trigger, that thing pisses me off to no end. If I hadn't any concern about the safety aspect of doing so, I'd have deleted that lock by now.

Aside from that gripe, the thing is... sorta okay. A smarter overall design would have permitted the chomper to be attached to the handle unit's pole (bottom image above), without requiring also the pole that's part of the chomper head (inseparable from the pole in the top image above). This thing should have been capable of being configured in three different lengths, instead of only two. Basic length, one extension, or two extensions.

I used it again just two days ago, and hated the damned thing all over again.

JMO, YMMV, etc.

The only benefit of a small garage, I guess. Less cleanup time. Can't complain though, I've put a lot of time in it, and it suits my needs fine for now. I'd love to jackhammer out the old busted up floor and pour a new one, but the Mrs.'s kitchen was higher on the budget priority.
