I picked up my gently used Precision Metal Works 7000lb lift yesterday and was able to stand the posts up today solo with my trusted engine hoist.. currently the posts are just standing in their approximate homes.. I need to get 3/4” anchors and decide on the final position, get a 220v outlet installed, do some cleanup on the posts and lift arms and she will be ready to go once I get everything back in place. Pretty excited to have this machine in the garage.

Hey Hemi, nice shop. I am also a cheese head. Looks great !

Cool man-where from??

In other news—this came home.. it was “sold” 4 years ago and never paid for. Early 331 Chrysler hemi, cast bellhousing style..

Another how did I miss this topic. Great building with some great projects.

I try—slowly and steadily.. [emoji108]

A hemi with a 2 barrel.

That's interesting......

Most of the early Hemi’s were two-barrel motors.. I’m not an expert—but this is a 1953 engine, first year of them.. not a super powerful engine in stock form-but one of the coolest engine platforms ever laid out!

And more today.. progress in small bites..

The old Hemi is sitting comfortably airborne.

The anchors for the lift were purchased this week.. Money has been tight as I’m having to fix a bunch of damage caused by tenants in my other place. It’ll be up for sale-my patience is not capable of my existence as a landlord.. #dirtbags..

Your shelving is looking good. You have some interesting things stacked up on there. thase wiper boxes look interesting to me along with those old bikes.
I have a 241 hemi out of a 53 dodge sitting in my garage waiting for me to build my 29 ford p/u

Don-

Thanks for visiting the thread. The racking has worked out really nice and is heavy enough that unless Wisconsin felt an earthquake- I should not have to worry about their strength and integrity for my use.

I have to admit I’ve got an affliction for all things “old” and related largely to automotive history and the life of cars. The Hemi actually was bought in San Diego in 2002’ish when I lived out there. A guy building an early F100 had it and decided to go the route of one of the then “new” modular Ford engines. I found it in a print ad in a local paper and got it for $300.. I’ve just saved it since then as I love the look and appeal of the Hemi’s as they relate to hot rods and racing.. Baby hemi’s all the way to 426’s are just damned neat. Also, the word “Firepower” on the valve covers just makes you smile.. If I don’t sell the 41 Ford Coupe-I’d like the 331 to end up in the engine compartment. [emoji106]

Those Anco countertop units were bought on a whim-and I’ve got them just to add to the “look” of the garage. If someone was in love with them-I’d sell them as they really are good for storing wipers-but not much else because of the compartment design-unless the insides were gutted.

Thanks again-
John

Just a few pieces to polish and it’ll be headed to auction unless a GJ’er wants her!! (“Her” cuz she’s getting purddddy!)

I realized today that it’s been many months that I’ve contributed anything to this thread or any others as the past 6 months have been hectic and interesting. But-I’ll keep this “garage” centric. I bought this USA made Precision Metal Works 7000lb lift out of a personal-use shop. It was in fine shape-it just needed to be moved and re-installed. Well, due to life it sat for six months until last week when I finally completed the install. It was installed with Wej-It 3/4” anchors and it functions beautifully. I give credit to Garage Journal as others have done similar installs and it gave me the courage to do the same. It’s already had my ‘79 Heep Wagoneer and my moms 2002 Toyota Highlander up top and it really is a nice unit.. Here’s some pictures..

eeff2ca3199c84bb75f29d91ae4dc36e.jpg

Meanwhile-here are some other shop additions from the past months that I’ve not added previously.

c2654d5c7e46f5afffac8e5bbf36c8fe.jpg

This is my sons Micro Mini BMX bike that he is nearly graduated to.. he will be three next month and is riding it already.. it’s exciting!

73b855803f4dc860c99d62a358857ea8.jpg

This is the Heep.. it came from Colorado-and I’m technically the second owner as the previous buyer never titled it in 2000 after bought from the original owner. Unfortunately it did have some rust in the floors.. I made new floors up front, and need to do the rear passenger area still..

5f39a51d4f69beaf0d6c0730a8ae6442.jpg

As you can see-the rust.

dccecb5d69a43a85643ad9b597e3560c.jpg

I made toe board sections and gabbed floor pan sections from 18ga steel.. I put beads in to match the originals pretty closely.

After three weeks of work and after about 20 years of hibernation-we took it on a 300mile camping trip.. it did NOT perform flawlessly.. but it was fun and the remaining issues are relatively minor..

And-a very cool sign I picked up.. hand painted wood-I doubt many exist!

I also hauled this cool old horizontal US Machine Tool Co Mill with a modified setup as a vertical mill out of a basement.. let’s just say-it wasn’t easy.

That’s generally a snapshot of where I’m at today!! Always glad to be part of this forum.

One of my favorite things is to find a build in the Garage Gallery I haven't seen yet and just binge to the end. I stumbled across this one today and it was definitely a fun thread.

Hemi, you have every reason to be proud, nice job!

is that mill rolling around on top of a Harbor Freight wheeled wooden mover?:headscrat:thumbup:

[emoji848] you almost got me.. it’s a fairly sturdy furniture dolly and the base of the mill lands almost dead nuts on top of the casters—it’s basically just a resting place until I can build a rolling steel base for it..

What a fantastic space! Thank you for sharing (even if we have to wait 6 months between posts).

I try to check in as frequently as I can if I have anything new to add!! These keep me busy!!

Awesome garage! you're right down the road from me too!

No kidding!! Small [emoji289]!!!

Nice shop including everything in it.

Thank you kindly!! I try to keep it tidy!

Thanks a ton.. I’ve found that GJ is more useful than just perusing while bored. I was able to draw a lot of inspiration, ideas, and knowledge from others both before and during my build-and even after. I’ve even met a few people in the process in person—and follow a handful of craftsman I’ve come to learn about through GJ. I’ve also found great ways to spend my money thanks to GJ’ets in the garage sale thread!!! [emoji106]

Sure is! Congrats!

Thank you!!

I just discovered this thread, and have enjoyed reading every page of it. I'm very impressed with everything you've accomplished thus far in building and utilizing your Dreamspace. Extra kudos for your creative use of reclaimed materials, and for finding the most cost-effective methods to complete the build without sacrificing quality.

I like the look and the function of the canvas-covered ceiling. While 95% of me thinks you won't have any problems with it, the remaining 5% is nagging at me regarding potential flammability. I say this because I've seen sparks from welding and grinding operations travel farther, and do more damage than I ever thought was possible. If you aren't doing so already, I would take extra precautions to minimize any potential risk of fire when undertaking those tasks.

Two of my customers have had fires started by welding or grinding sparks that travelled vertically in a forward motion, and landed between the interior and exterior walls of their buildings. In one case, an employee noticed smoke rising from between the walls, and was able to extinguish the smoldering insulation before it fully ignited. In the other case, the business owner and his only employee/right-hand man (who was welding at the time) didn't realize that sparks had jumped behind the wall. They went out to lunch, and when they returned the building and its contents were a total loss.

Thank you-your concern is well placed as I considered quite greatly the cautions you outlined above. I’ve never liked throwing sparks upwards-let alone at any interior part of my home or garage. I compare the thought of shooting an AK47 into the air—bad stuff is going to happen, somewhere.. I did however use the corrugated steel overlapped appropriately in the event I do any welding near my south wall. I think it comes down to mindfulness when it comes to our tasks inside our shops and where our actions could have some detrimental results.

So-thank you very much sir!

Cool thread. Subscribed.

Hope you like it!!

Here’s a sideways task that was unexpected. I bought what was supposed to be a “ready to race” Bmx Bike off EBay—and as we have deduced-the spoke tension was too great and the NukeProof hub flange cracked and pulled away.. as my research on the web yielded-this was sadly a common flaw with these hubs. These wheels were assembled with Titanium spokes when new-and thankfully the spokes didn’t break.

f0025e7302c5063f0103277356d55e00.jpg

Pinched back together with a hose clamp for now..

6a1bcbcd096fdc8ccbb2eff0ccd4267d.jpg

As an edit to this post--the repair did not work. The hub was welded correctly and then machined on a lathe to get the surfaces looking "correct". When rebuilding the wheels, the spokes were very lightly tensioned and the hub flange ripped apart again.. No Bueno. Ah well..

I've not been on GJ in some time, largely due to my absence from using any of the forums--for no other reason that I've been busy with kids and little projects and not posting anything about what I've been doing. In the past six months more "junk" has made it's way into the shop and there's not much more room inside (hence the "space creates vacuum" theory is now a law.).

Here's pictures of a '48 Pontiac SilverStreak I've been working on that made it's way into my hands this past October. It's a completely rust-free western car which I'm waiting on some machine work to wrap up on the original cylinder head and I believe she should be a runner. I've been through the brakes and once she's a runner-I'll do the electric and the interior will get spiffed up.. She's a real beauty..

Next is this '70 Cyclone GT that I rescued from a Craiglist ad that I could not refuse. It's an honest "survivor" with a little floor rust and a lot of great options. It's an oddball of the muscle car class that for some reason I really like the looks of.

In all--I'm dedicated now to try and keep working on the projects I have and hopefully not acquiring any more. I certainly have plenty to keep me more than busy when I have a little time away from the family--which is rare--but I can't complain as I'm blessed with all that I have.

Hope all who read this are enjoying time in their "making-spaces"!!

Re: My Escape-2982sqft Shop/Garage/Hobby Epicenter in Wisconsin

I posted these over in the Vintage Cabinet thread-if you’ve not been on there-check it out!

Here’s a few pictures of some of my old junk. I like the old cabinets and storage chests-you can’t beat the looks.. these two large glass front metal cabinets are 38-1/2” tall, 28-1/2” wide and 8” deep, heavy and well made-I’m not sure what I’ll put in yet as I just finished cleaning the two are of gunk off of them and paint off the glass.

The Filko cabinets and old school Craftsman tool chests took a while to locate-and the Snapon wall cabinet was a recent find. The Equipto parts bins are awesome-I have two other sections under my work benches. It’s awful nice to have “stuff” so that you don’t need to run to the store for small pieces for projects.

Nice shop

Thanks for stopping by.. I try to take advantage of what free time I have separate of the family to either de-stress or just occupy my mind in the garage..

Tonight it was rehabbing-primarily cleaning 45 years of junk from this old grinder.. buy-sell-upgrade.. [emoji120]

I have to get this gem cleaned up and hung up before something bad happens to it. We’ve estimated late 40’s as the age, it’s working neon with a later transformer working the light.. I want to build a plexiglass shield to protect it from who knows what.. I’m trying to prevent falling down the neon-sign rabbit hole.. [emoji195]

Also this past week was a 1500+ mile trip to grab this $100 motor and transmission.. 1953 Pontiac straight-8 and hydramatic to swap into the ‘48 Pontiac when it’s time..

Read through your thread today. Very nicely done. I especially like the reclaimed garage wood and corrugated on the one wall, that looks very nice! The vintage lights and storage are super cool as well.
