Slow Friday, but at least the rain for the W/E got pushed to Monday or so.. One sale, it was a "repeat offender" but close by and usually has at least some new turnover.

Found these - a minimalist Victronix and not missing the often lost slide in pieces. and the advertising one is a Zippo.

I almost left these but they are is good working order, not molested, and I had a thought:

Clip these with or in the lantern boxes, or with the spare mantles, and I always have a small snipper for the mantle strings after tying them on.

Ronsen-adn-Vic.jpg

Other side of the advertiser is North West Marine... I may grind a screwdriver tip on the file tip on that one.

Ended up at an estate sale for an office desk and file cabinet for my wife's classroom. First time in a couple years. Apparently the husband had been a machnist at one time as they had multiple machinist boxes (50's Craftsman, Kennedy, etc) filled with machinists tools. Unfortunately, they were stored outside and most of the precision tools were covered in rust.

Couldn't pass up the "T" hex key set (ET brand, made in USA) and stand that he machined himself. Solid block of aluminum. $15.

Took a little cruise down-valley to a local honey hole that just reopened for the season. Nice afternoon for it.

I was specifically looking for an old, high-wattage soldering gun, which I recalled them always having a few of, for soldering my alternator rebuild bits back together. Struck out.

But I've also been keeping my eyes open for some fuel storage for longer trips in the Brick. When I've run across Gerry cans, US or German, they've been pretty highly priced, but

55213987861_fda5145b92_o.jpg

US embossed, $10 each--yeah! They look a little rough outside, but are pristine inside, which is what matters. No significant rust on the bottom rim. I'll make a couple of Viton gaskets and they'll be perfect.

Now I have to build some sort of roof rack holder for them to carry them lying down. My plan is to fill them on the roof, then siphon them from there when I need the fuel--no carrying full 5 gal. cans up and down a ladder.

I've been using old outboard motor boat tanks for that. And an electric pump.
I'm not sure if I could find a 10 gal. outboard tank for $20 around here. Besides, having two makes it easier to distribute the weight.

So much for making a holder.

I can't make something for $40, and that's just about exactly what I was thinking of. I ordered one for now.

I could make rear bumper mounts for the cans--then I'd have a VW, Subaru AND Ford Pinto hybrid!

you bought 2 Jerry cans to get to 10 gallons...

I have a rack I made to stack 3 boat tanks on my eagle trailer's front cargo deck I added to it. works great.

that's just about exactly what I was thinking of. I ordered one for now.

Add a locking steel strap to replace one of the web straps, I lost a Jerry can off the back of my Samurai. one cut adn ot was gone...

I never got the point of Pintos, either.

Pintos and Vegas were Ford and GM's initial response to the Japanese invasion. My 71 coupe was one of the best cars I ever had, Totally reliable and great gas mileage, near 40 MPG to and from sacraments several times. it was a great car to have during the Gas crises...

I cut the offending bolts short and replaced the stock bumper with some 3X 1-1/2 channel after a rear ender destroyed my bumper, and I wanted to be able to tow a trailer. - All with the 75 HP 1600

I would not mind finding a 71 wagon with the 1600 to pick up as a DD. Not many left...

Oh, I am just joking about Pinto's. Vega's deserved their reputation, Corvair's didn't, nor did Audi, but that is just the way it goes. As far as the gas crisis, my parents had a '66 Mustang, and my dad swung and bought a friends '67 Datsun pickup, the first of many.

After a visit with the copilot’s Dr which went well, we were off to the only sale that showed any promise in Alamo. There wasn’t much to choose from but a socket box that looked to be all rejects actually had a few keepers mostly Emeryville era Thorsen. We came home with these. IMG_8144.jpeg
The little shop vac was barely used but was missing the hose. That didn’t matter to me since I have extras from worn out vacuums. IMG_8146.jpeg

We picked up some of our favorite barbecue in Pleasant Hill to celebrate the positive Dr’s report and headed home.

I was helping my parents out with seasonal yard chores last week, and we got to reminiscing over the Pinto wagon we took on vacation from the northern tier of PA to the Everglades (and back). It was a pale yellow, but living in the salt belt, eventually got pop-riveted tin for lower door panels. That was my dad’s DD, while my mom’s was a sky blue Beetle. Later, my dad got a green T2 microbus (he removed seats for hauling firewood) and my mom got a silver Fiesta. I learned to drive on the van, and took the Fiesta my senior year at college, when they got a Rabbit.

My buddy Tom and I decided to do the US Highway 80 giant yard sale in our area. Starting in the Bossier Shreveport Louisiana area we headed West towards Waskom and Marshall Texas. Although a lot of sales were slow "drive bys" full of clothes and stuff we found a few good deals.
The first things I picked up were a vintage Craftsman paint gun and a Lone Ranger USA made toy pistol holder for 6 bucks. I picked up 2 Coleman lanterns, they will be in the next post with more lanterns. Tom picked up a set of Polaris stock wheels and tires for his Razor for $70.
At a church ⛪️ sale I picked up a toolbox with a lot of Sockets, lots of Craftsman, some Snap On, Proto and other USA brands and a lot of import sockets. $25 including all the license plates.
Next I picked up the vintage Craftsman toolbox for $10, a bit rough but cheap!
And finally we hit a small sale where I picked up the Pony USA clamps, GM Goodwrench scribe, Craftsman stuff and Starrett ruler for 6 bucks. After that we had lunch at Cajun Tex in Marshall and hustled back to Bossier so Tom could take care of the new family puppy.

More adventures from the US Highway 80 sale! After taking care of Tom's puppy 🐶 😍 Milo and enjoying a beer 🍺 Tom and I headed east on 80. The first stop I picked up the Auto Meter tach, Ford F150 tie downs, military tool bag and Jim Beam whiskey Indianapolis 500 decanter for $12.
At another sale I picked up the hand wheel for $3 and everything else in the pic was $1 each.
And the last stop I bought at I got 4 Coleman lanterns, a heater, the red lamp, the 1930's General Electric Telechron working clock ⏰️ and all the vehicle emblems for $78. After that Tom and I enjoyed a couple of "Happy Hour refreshments" and headed back to Bossier. A good day!
Edit, the 2 Coleman's I got from Texas for $15 are in the same photo as the 4 I got from Minden.

Nice score!
It’s amazing that your nearly 100 year old electric clock is still running. I used to have that same model same vintage clock on the wall above my workbench. It stopped running and those sealed up mechanisms are basically not repairable. I replaced it with a 30 year newer model GE but the old timey font on the face is not there anymore. ☹️

In case some of our younger members aren’t familiar with those clocks, the red dot is a flag that drops down in a window when the clock loses power. That reminds folks that the time won’t be correct and needs to be reset.

Today there was a town wide yard sale a few towns over from me. They have a small vendor sale at a school to start at and get a map. The weather is pretty crappy today cool and spitting rain! Not a hell of a lot of tools though. I hit about 10 of the participants and only 1 got me anything. Here’s my small haul.

Bag of new file handles mostly Lutz, a Craftsman and a Skrooz on and 1 Millers Falls carving tool
Starrett 6” machinist level, top vial is empty very light chipped paint.
Greenlee 1” square punch
Welding hammer no name but crusty

$15 for the day

Beautiful weather notwithstanding and despite once of the better flea markets (with good seller attendance), lots of TOO's, and one decent advertised sale, I nearly got skunked! I spent a whole dollar on this at the planned sale:
Nylon-abrasive-cup-brush-Opinel-folding-knife.jpg
A Nylon abrasive cup brush, and an Opinel folding knife...

The french seems to be some obscure advertising? "Men and Techniques of Savoy"

I finally got on the board today . . .

First stop of the day in the basement I see a RED thumb oiler. I look closer and it's a translucent EAGLE oiler. I was marked $5.00 and we tossed it in with a bunch of stuff and it was basically $2.00.

Eagle_Thumb_Oiler.jpg

Last weekend I picked up a FREE HP15C calculator with sleeve and manual. The batteries were corroded but a quick cleaning and 3 new batteries and it's a keeper. I have an 11C upstairs in my desk and the 15C is living downstair in a workbench drawer.

Cheers

I love Reverse Polish Notation! Still have my 12c from college. Sh*t, it’s at least 46 years old and it still works.

We were required to buy a 12CX for our first-year engineering classes. I got right handy programming it and saving the programs on those little magnetic strips. I wish I still had mine.

Went out this morning to snag this Gem. This is a pretty sweet set made in Japan. I use to crack on these back when they came out, but honestly, these are very nice. By weight alone, you can feel it isn’t the ultra cheap **** you got years later. Ten Dollar Bill, and worth every penny ….. K-Mart Auto….👍

I was never a fan of RPN. I bought a Sharp Elsi-mate EL-5100 programmable and it had a long LCD readout and you could program and see a long calculation with variables to insert and I set it up for calculating etched and printed resistors for the MIC (Micro Intrgrated Circuits) Microwave electronics I was designing at the time. I still have it but it gave up even with new batteries.

A few years ago I found one still n the box and it was still operational, and bought it for $10 i was thrilled.

not mine but the same:

We headed to San Leandro this morning to a sale put on by a favorite estate sale company, the Tie Dye people. Great people but unfortunately no tools to speak of. After looking thoroughly we found some nice little Visegrips and an empty DeWalt drill bit set box. IMG_8166.jpegIMG_8167.jpegIMG_8168.jpeg
After that disappointing experience we headed across the San Rafael bridge to a family run living estate sale in Novato. The greeter at that sale was the owner’s 22 yr old Chihuahua, definitely a senior citizen in dog years. Sorry, no pictures. We did find a few tools though. IMG_8170.jpegI liked the Snap-on screwdriver although the warning on the handle had been ignored.IMG_8172.jpeg
The tin snips were Powr-Kraft, decent Channellocks and some additions to my Rosco screwdriver collection.IMG_8170.jpeg
Cleaned up the Rosco drivers.IMG_8185.jpeg
Added some of the bits from yesterday’s sale and finished filling the DeWalt box from my sharpened spares. IMG_8186.jpeg-Don
