Update:
Started this thread a year ago, and bought the cheap reel that HD/Lowes sell with 150ft 16ga capacity. Been using it for a year, and while it does barely hold 100ft of 12/3, and is better than coiling by hand, it *****. Unless I'm reeling the cord very neatly, the last few yards of cord are making contact with the reel's stand and the ground and my hand gripping the carry handle, so I have to tip or lift the reel to avoid that. And because the reel is so full near the end, it's very easy to have the cord go outside the reel's edges.

I need a better solution. Anyone use the Reel-A-Pail?

Original post:
I have a 100ft 12/3 extension cord and would like a reel for it to save time and hassle of manually looping the cord back up (and preventing knots). Most of the reels I see on Amazon will hold 75ft of 12/3, so those won't work. I do NOT need a reel with built-in outlets. Just a reel with a stand and handle, as I need it to be portable. I only use this cord when I need the length, so overheating by using the cord while it's mostly reeled up is not an issue.

Any suggestions?

I‘ve used a version of the HD reel listed above for the last 10+ years with no problems

Have you looked at any air hose or garden hose reels ?
No, because I need it to be portable, so air hose reels are generally out, and I don't want the bulk of a garden hose reel.

I'll give the HDX reel version with handle and stand (advertised as holding 150ft 16/3 cord) a try, since guys are reporting that this will work. My 100ft 12/3 cord is SJEOOW, so it's very flexible, so I suppose that increases odds of it working with this reel.

100ft 12gauge is what I use when mowing the lawn. A twist of wrist, every other coil, pretty much eliminates the cord tangles. Easier and faster than a cord reel. Secure the coil with a velcro wrap.

Yeah, I use that over under method, and it works fine on shorter cords, but the 100ft cord will usually end up with a tangle, so when I need all 100ft, I almost always have to waste time untangling. Tired of it.

This is why I like a reel for my 100 footers. Makes it easier to lay out the cord, and rolling it up is fast

One of my pet-peeves is cords that get coiled too tightly. Puts a nasty memory in the cord and increased tendency to not pay them out, and they heat up more.

I still coil my cords by hand. Big arm-span loops. Same way normal people coil a garden hose.
