This seems to be the bike restoration thread around here. Don't see too many road bikes though.

Seems like a good place to post a link to this Australian company (King of the Mountain) that makes replacement hoods for older Shimano STI road levers

I ordered and received the 7700 for 9 Speed Dura Ace and the 5500/6500 for 9 Speed Ultegra.

I haven't had a chance to install them, but they look fine to me. I think they may be the only ones making these 9 speed ones. Shimano certainly doesn't support this.

The prices listed are in Australian dollars, so don't be shocked, I was charged in US$. it seems reasonable to me even with shipping from Australia. Not too many other reliable choices for obtaining 9 speed or earlier anyway. I believe Hudz start at 10 speed.

I'm glad they're making them.

The boy has been hitting the trail jump stuff in town with his boys. We’ve been trying to come up with a trail setup in the yard, but a good plan hasn’t been easy. The backyard woods would be amazing, but a ton of work.
After the Intense came home the boy was in the front yard launching this skateboard jump with a run up off the road. Huh, maybe we need to use the road. We’ve got a thin woodsy piece separating our grass from the road. Let’s clear that out, enter off the road, and get some features in there.

The boy and I have been on a selling spree since the Bike Jumble to fund a second nice bike. We needed a smaller frame than the Intense for the boy. He wanted more downhill and aluminum, I wanted interchangeability, like oh you tacoed the back rim, toss mine on. So, we just grabbed this…

I’ve been to some businesses with campuses that have community bikes like this, Google has a bunch of bikes. Ford plants can be a lot like micro cities, a lot of skilled trades use bikes to allow them to transport tools and themselves quickly and safely through the plants. Makes sense, less potential for injury compared to golf carts or cushmans flying around.

The neighbor got donated 90’s his and her’s Schwinn’s from his parents. His daughter is interested in the neon pink one, so we are giving it a tune up. It’s been garage kept, so in pretty good shape overall. I’ve ordered some grip shifts as the shifters are beat and then all we should need is a few fresh cables to get it campground ready.

Pulled levers and cables. Wheels are in my truck and will get a parts washer bath tomorrow. Frame was hosed off and given a boiled linseed oil rub to bring the shine.

The cleaned up Schwinn made it back to the neighbor. Another bike back on the road.
The boy had a slight tear on his kidney the other week after a fall. He’s fine, bikes fine, and bouncing back.
And grabbed a roadside scrap bike. I’m thinking an ‘86 ish Rockhopper. First time I’ve come upon those cool bullmoose bars. And the thumbies look quality. Plan is to pull it apart, clean the parts, and find them a new home. Frame is solid, but wildly sun faded.

That's a cool bike.. looks like a survivor 'cept 1/2 the paint lol. All the stock parts look like they are there.

Grips look oe, seat, brake pads... thing probably has hardly any miles on it.

Agreed. Seat is vintage and pristine. I’m thinking it’s been leaning beside a shed for the last 30 years, untouched. It’s wild to think what the sun did to the paint, like beautiful red under the cable shadows. Wild.

With the cold, the boy has requested that we drag his bike into the basement for a lube and go through. We pulled the crank to chase a noise in the bb. Yeah, it’s going to need a bearing on one side, not destroyed, but it won’t be getting better. She also needs a new shifter cable housing.
Once the bearing is ordered we will take care of all that.

I got a 1992 GT Tequesta kicking around in the shed plus a newer Diamond Back with suspension up front to hit some of the down hill around here if I ever get back into shape.

GT I would love to restore but I think it will just get sold off for a couple hundy. DiamondBack is a little small for me to ride lots but would be easy to throw around. It could get sold off in the spring too….

Decisions decisions…help! I think I rather have a proper sized bike (if not Ebike to boot)for me as well seriously talk to the better half about selling off hers too for an ebike too.

I finally got around to installing the Ultegra hoods this weekend. I waited till now as I was doing a complete cable/housing (shift and brake) and bar wrap replacement on that bike and would take the STI levers off the bars.

The hoods fit very well and feel great so far. Certainly thicker feeling that the old Shimano hoods. Little isopropyl alcohol to help slip them on. Long term I have no idea yet.

I lubed up the rear shifter as well with tri-flow, more thoroughly than most times as I had it off the bar. I let it sit before putting the new hood on.

Lubed shifter, new cable and housing........... shifts like a hot knife through butter.

Been too long since a post. Moving into bike season. I do like my super v’s and this frame and headshock popped up on the Facebook for free. I’ve got most of the parts for the build.

Added wheels and tires, seatpost, bars, stem. Clean crankset and derailleur. Got most of what I need, except shifters.

It’s been in the plan to build a skinny to come in off the road into the yard as it drops in nicely. This morning was the day.

8ft of old deck 2 by 8’s to come in levelish from the street then angle down another 8ft into the grass. A fun way to enter and exit the yard, none of that use the driveway type thinking.

The boy somehow broke the b tension spring on his sram rear derailleur. We opened it up to confirm today and ordered a kit to repair it.
He also brought up how we should have gone up to Killington this weekend to ski the glacier. I’m definitely not feeling it, but it would be a party. Next year we are chasing those final ski days.
He’s also talking downhilling at Thunder Mountain for opening weekend this weekend. I’m also not up for that, but we will be riding soon enough.
Found the floor in the shed and made a plan to get the tandem trike rideable for the 4th of July. My father has been riding his trike with his beach community parade each 4th, so maybe he can ride the tandem trike with one of my kiddos, or maybe me!
Cut a stainless mirror mount scrap to make arms to stabilize the rear trike axle. Even tossed a dowel in the little lathe to make end plugs. Need to finalize axle angle before drilling, but it was raining.
