Haven’t been around for awhile as we have been keeping pretty busy. Our weather has been above average for most of the winter and now we are half way through February so that is a positive.
We spent a week with a former school chum and his Wife at Canmore/Banff area. While we have done this trip a number of times it was nice to do it with someone that doesn’t get the chance as often. Managed to take in aspects/sights that were new to us as well.
We went to St. Martin for 3 weeks with another couple and had a great time. The only problem I see with SM is the ridiculous amount of cars on the road. Which is likely the result of the size of the island to traverse and the amount of tourists. We have made it to SM twice before. First on a cruise and decided we wanted to return and see it in a little more depth. Our second trip was just before the Covid epidemic hit.
We have made it to lake a few times which we always enjoy as we can see my daughter, FSIL and our 2 Grandchildren.
Last weekend we made a trip to Edmonton. We took our Daughter and Grandkids and met up with our FSIL who was out mountain sledding and cut his trip short and met us in Edmonton. The high light was not the Mall but meeting up with an old friend. This fellow was in his early twenties when he built our house at the farm when I was a kid. I was kid of about 10 and I was his shadow helping where ever I could. I guess you can say I was his gopher.
About 5-6 years back I took it on myself to locate my buddy. Well with the help of the net and him still having a landline I found him after about 3 phone calls. I don’t know how I found out that he was likely in Edmonton but he was. I stopped in and seen him and he showed me some of his treasures. Everything from furniture he has made, antiques, tools and of course his shop. He must have enjoyed the visit as well as he texted me later that evening and I sent him a pic his wife had taken of the 2 of us. He called before we left the next morning and said he would drop in on me the next time he was in our area. That summer years ago was probably one of the best I spent, well maybe me and my Grandpa going fishing up north would be right up there as well. 
Here is a couple pics of some of the furniture he has built and our reunion.
I placed this in the Pull Up A Chair but thought this would be a good idea.

In the end both of us totally enjoyed the visit. I’ll probably make the trip again during the summer. He was going to bring me out some laminated beam castoffs. Said that he would likely cut them down to bring in his truck. I’m thinking I’ll take my trailer then I can get the full lengths. I’m thinking they would build a hell of a garage shop table.

Had some Cherry and Oak I thought I would make a great frame for a piece of art we had our neighbour paint
Bought the Cherry at an auction the Oak is left over from our home renovation. Appears the Cherry has been in storage for quite some time. Cut it up and strapped it down to my bench and then went on a 3 week holiday.
Trimmed up the Cherry, then tried a little trick I had heard about to age it quickly. Sprayed the lumber with the old school Easy Off and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Then rinsed off and let dry.

While waiting I aged up some tacks a cut down some already rusty finishing nails for firming up the tin on the pic.
Routed out some material for the Oak inlay. Then about 4 coats of Watco Cherry burnished in with 0000 steel wool, which I thought was adequate.

It isn’t perfect but will be placed relatively high so I left a few imperfections. My buddy refers to those a little Emilesque.

My wife has an old wood toboggan from when she was a kid. Since she was the youngest in the family and her brother would be 80 now and her sister was an additional 5 years more. I’m guessing this toboggan could be at least 70+ years old. It had couple of chunks missing on the rear at the end. When we were much younger we used to use it regularly. Only problem that missing piece would act like a rudder and it wouldn’t track straight. So you compensated by dragging one hand as you moved along. Didn’t work great but we managed many years ago.
I had always thought of cutting off that section but never got around to it. Now that time allows, I thought the Grandson could use a new ride. So a restoration was in order.
What we started with:
My FIL generally marked his possessions in one manner or another. But the following hieroglyphics didn’t make much sense. During the restoration it dawned on me that this was the address of their home when they lived in another city and that alone was 68+ years ago. My Wife says her and her Mom drove by the house many years ago but couldn’t remember the address any more. But next time we are in the area we will do a drive by.
Still working on the restoration so my next post should be the finished project.

I finished the toboggan today. When I was wondering how to place a good surface on the underside I was thinking a good sanding and some paste wax. Well I have no old fashioned paste wax and then remembered I used to do our down hill skis and found it tucked away down stairs still fully intact. Even a folding iron. 
Proceeded to wax base but wasn’t going to cork it like in the old days. So I thought about what I use for the vehicles. Kind of a mistake due to the transferring of auto residue. Doesn’t work the same as metal polishing so I found out. This was a nice clean surface before I did this. Really no problem as it will eventually clean up in the snow.
So not going back to cork so I thought I would use one of the old cork applicators and step it up a bit.
The end result was pretty good in my estimation.
I just hope that there is still some snow available when I see the Grandkids for the maiden voyage.

that toboggan brings back memories. hours upon hours in the winter in the "gully" tobogganing. so cold your blood was probably frozen but we kept on going

Yes good memories. I remember being in the cold as a kid and today those same temps don’t bring the urge to even go out now unless I truly have to.

This is kinda cool I looked up the address on the toboggan where the in-laws used to live around 70 years ago. The only one still around that did see the house once on a drive by was my wife accompanied by her Mom. That was a long time ago and her memory didn’t quite click I guess another drive by is in order.

Started a new restoration a vintage Eaton’s wringer. When completed it will be hung between the IKEA cabinets at the cabin in the laundry area.

Had the Grandson and he wanted some garage time. At an online auction I found 250 paint mixing sticks. I figure he can put them on one of his projects. He worked on a new styrofoam/cardboard/wood resort with a water park project. Got a pretty good start and we went in for lunch. But the 2 of us,with the Grandaughter and dog went on a quick excursion to try out the restored toboggan for a test ride. We found we need more real estate because this old wood toboggan has game. The Grandson has named it “The Rocket” and for a good reason. Kind of glad I didn’t do an extra coat of wax on the bottom.

The clothes ringer is a work in progress but got my Daughter in to help out with some stencilling work. She has more drawing supplies than anyone I know. I’ve located a vintage washboard that will join the wringer once completed. Not quite sure of the type of wood used in the washboard and what will be used for a finish. The wringer appears to be constructed of Maple.
So unsure if I’ll just use paste wax or BLO, or both.
Sanding the upper portion of the ringer would have been brutal so figured I’d use the lathe and it worked great but a little wobbly as I only tied it into the lathe on one end.

Life has a way of moving along. The crib below was purchased for me many years ago. It went through my younger Brother and Sister and a multitude of neighbour kids. But eventually I retrieved it and refurbed it for our two Daughters. The rails were beyond fixing so were rebuilt, the brass hardware was what I found that worked. I sanded it down and restrained it. While sanding down I found a bunch of “C” marks ground into the wood. My Mom said that was me as I used to chow down on the rails. Since it was a large crib it likely used for a greater duration. 
It was then put into service first for our Grandson then our Granddaughter. Our Granddaughter is now 2 1/2 and it has been decided she would just use the mattress on the floor. My Daughter didn’t want her climbing out and fracturing her arm. Something she did when she figured she could scale out of her playpen and fractured her arm. You should have seen how the medical people scrutinized us when a cast was needed.
The kids are growing up and I’m having trouble keeping up at times.
Those are fresh chew marks, guess someone was hungry or something. At least this time it wasn’t me.

My Daughter and Grandkids came for a visit. My Wife, Daughter and Granddaughter did their fair share of shopping. My Grandson and I did the big Easter car show. We also managed some garage time and went tobogganing. We had a great visit but boy am I bushed.

Well my Grandson has headed back home. Disaster has struck. This is the disorder I’m stuck with. Well it was partly my fault as he would have had plenty of time to clean up. But I made the call to find that elusive toboggan hill for a last attempt of putting the “Rocket” (toboggan) to the test. Well one major hill that makes snow for skiing is totally fenced off likely to liability issues. The other big hill faces the East and South and the sun has taken care of that. We then came back to what we have within walking distance. The north facing side had snow but pretty mushy so wasn’t near as good when he was in a week ago or so. Got a few licks in but he managed to get his boots and gloves soaking wet. We got the call that they had to head out ASAP as soon as we got home. So I’m in charge of cleanup.

Got around to doing the door pulls for the lake laundry cabinets. Had some Cherry cutoffs and have a pile of Bamboo stir sticks that were collecting dust. I’ve never used inserts before so I bought some at Lee Valley. Laminated the material, did some sanding and hit them with 2 light coats of poly. Unsure if I’ll do any more poly but I’ll look at them again tomorrow.

Finally finished the wringer and wash board, used a Plastic Urethane for the wood portions. All metals were hit with spray on matte coating. My younger Daughter touched up the lettering. The urethane raised the wood fibres to a degree, was going to give it a slight sand for a second coat. I used steel wool and everything was nice and smooth so I left it alone. So here it is tada.
Will eventually find its way to cabin for wall art in the laundry area.

if I did as you suggested, I’m pretty sure I would be in charge of laundry and the Grandkids would likely help as they love playing in the water. I’m guessing rubber boots would be involved.Even more likely this would happen.

Dug out what I believe is the last of the wall phones. Surprising what a person can accumulate without realizing it. The fourth from the left, the ivory rotary dial was our cabin phone. I hung that 36 years ago, the reason I know this as the phone was dated on the rear. I wondered why I had this particular phone until I looked at the phone # which rang a bell in the old memory banks.
The rest need a dusting at least. Then I’ll check the desk phones but I have to deal with these first.
