Looking for some cool ideas for custom labels for my restored Lista & Lyon tool cabinets. I'm about a year into the reorganization (I move pretty fast - try to keep up) and I'm getting pretty close to having everything put away into my cabinets. I have been temporary using blue tape as I figure out the best spot for everything. Now that most things have found a home, I want to come up with some nice labels. I can't seem to find many examples. Anyone seen anything cool or creative out there?

Thanks, but I gotta have labels and the blue tape just can't stay. I have a label maker, but these have turned out so well, I thought it would be cool to have some neat custom label.

I bought some old military vidmar cabinets.

The insert on the handle that slides out had vinyl lettering for each drawer. The vinyl is big enough to see from a reasonable distance.

Correct. There is a slider that slides into those handles. They are $$$ last time I checked.

One paper, and then 1 clear plastic piece.

Get one of those Guillotine things and make them....

(I got the Blue masking tape right now while I get it all organized because it is easier to visualize what can maybe go where etc, but after it is 100% set, I just won't have labels. (Luckily, I can remember my 133 drawers))

I have used a roll of magnetic tape and a label maker to make custom labels. They are not fancy at all, but you can make whatever labels you like and they are easily moved if you re-arrange.

You could have some one with a cnc plasma cutter and scribe do these for you. They could scribe the lettering then cut out the perimeter. You could run over the scribing with a paint pen and wipe off the excess to give it contrast. This is what I plan to do with my cabinets once I buy/build a scribe for my plasma table.

got me thinking. that there had to be a easy cheap solution that could be made to look pro.

Found this:

http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Pr...booking/Magnet-Sheets/Magnet-Sheets_03270.htm

That has some potential!

I can't quite picture what you are describing, but it made me realize I have access to a laser engraver and that might be the ticket! So many cool things can be done with a laser. I'm thinking a thinking a thin black, red or blue anodized aluminum sheet, sheered into strips, and engrave away the text so it comes through as silver text....? Hmmm....where to source really thin anodized material?

I purchased two Equipto cabinets and two Lista cabinets. I bought the mylar at Hobby Lobby and used my label maker to make the labels, using the mylar to protect them.

The mylar sold by Equipto is really expensive so that is why I went the route that I did.

I thought about phenolic labels but I change my mind to much.

Any idea how thin the metal (stainless or aluminum) would need to easily bend into the lista label holders? They have a slight curve to them.

This is the route I went.

Take note that the magnet tape has a strong side and a weak side. The label needs to go on the side with the line (weak side). If you get it backwards the labeled won't stick and you will have to remake them. If you're like me 3 freaking times.

I used 3/4" tape and magnets.

Did it come in a large sheet? How did you cut it? Easy, or did it want to crack?

The LISTA cabinet you own have aluminum handles so the magnetic stuff will not work. Those handles accept a special label with a plastic cover. Your handle swill have a groove that the label slides into.

Depending on the cabinet size they are under $1.50 each. It lokls like you have some SC cabinets and for those the GJ price is $0.97 each.

That was my only issue was that it came in 8.5" by 11" (normal paper size) which did not make them wide enough to cover the entire handle length.

New mylar isn't as brittle as the aged (yellowed) stuff when I bought the cabinet. Easy to cut with scissors using an old piece to cut the size.

Found in the material area and used by seamtresses who cut material for dress making.

Awesome. Thanks FJ 432.

I'll try to source some mylar local, maybe the sticker dudes can cut strips for me. $100 or so would be worth it for me....

(Painting them all white and black, one by one, quite the chore. Oil base paint)

I'd go one of two routes:

Either have the labels cut with a decal cutter- any font/color/shape you desire

or

Make your own by etching copper or a similar metal (like this)-

Mine turned out way better than I expected after painting them all. Also, why I want to try and make the labels look cool. Nice job on yours!

Decal cutter is a great idea. I will look into that. But that copper etching looks awesome! Not sure if it's right for this application, but I could see using that for other stuff...did you do this?

The smaller Lista has the aluminum handles - I did notice the grooves. The 2 wider cabinets are the new style with the flip up plastic covers. Will the Lista software label maker work for both styles or just the newer?

Thanks. Yes, I made that. I created the design for the resist with my decal cutter. Stainless can be etched, too, though not as deeply.

I’m interested to know what you ended up deciding on.

I just picked up this cabinet and have been cleaning it for a few days, metal shavings embedded in old grease and gunk. Also missing the two black caps on the bottom pull.
I’m thinking maybe just replace the pulls with new ones that include the plastic and paper for the labels. I’d like something unique if available.

Love the black and gray. What brand of paint and colors did you use?
