Not sure what their intended use is, but the swivel has ensures that it is always parallel to that side of the thing being gripped.

You should try that. And compare the pics you find to the pics op posted. Gonna have a tough time getting to the plug weld through that solid jaw, don't ya think?

I Googled and can see why you suggested that. However, the tapered tip of the opposing (non-brass) jaw matches the patent I discovered above and fits the purpose of fixing a piano key felt. Thanks for the education!
