Shop build is getting started in a few weeks. They plan to put down better pads where the 2 post will go. Cuz of my land this is the best config for the the shop layout. Where would you put the hoist? I'm thinking along the 50' side about 15ish feet from the 40 wall? Shop will be 40x50x18

Tell "them" not to do this and to read the instructions. There are many threads on this. The lift instructions tell us (for good reasons) to do otherwise.

New slabs are completely flat for a 2 post lift. If an existing slab doesn't meet specs, than a special retrofit slab needs to be cut out and re-poured. Typically, its all one section and the lift manufacturer has specific instructions.

Hard to tell with the info provided.... But with the two doors, if one is primary access and the other secondary, I would place the lift centered on the secondary access door right next to it. Can always drive thru it if no car is on it and if something is being worked on the rest of the space is still accessible from your primary access.

It depends on what youre using the space and lift for.
If you're using both doors to park vehicles in and arent using the lift much or leaving projects on it long term put it down the 50 foot side. Down the other side you're not leaving yourself much room to work and get another car in there behind it. If you don't care about that and are regularely using the hoist for different vehicles put it in the short side so that you don't have to drive that far in or always have to move what's between it and the door to get to it.

Beam with trolly. Back trailer in and able to unload and/or move load to loft if needed.

define "Hoist." It can mean a two post floor lift, a fixed single spot overhead hoist, one that runs along a beam, or one that has movement all over the shop as in a huge crane. Which of these is it, or in between?

Wasn't sure. Could have been trying to avoid the 2 post interfering with use of a hoist. Or wants to be able to use the hoist in conjunction with the lift.

Good point. I was thinking he's only talking about one thing but not so sure now. It can be 2 post lift or 2 post hoist depending on the area someone is in. Or be the two different things.

like a hoist to move an engine from his assembly bench to the vehicle, and a lift to get under it to install the transmission and transfer case... .
