We thought about a wall mounted mirror when we redid our master bath in 2023. After going through the same frustrations as you are, we went with a nice standalone lighted mirror. Easy to replace when the time comes. Our situation is a bit different as the end of the vanity has a dropped section where she can sit and do her makeup.

Had no idea. Tells you the price point of the peanuts on my gallery.

Other then price, are you OK with the nameeks you listed?
Not really. The Nameeks one has its features and faults that I find after reading about it on seller reviews
  • Lowest price I have found is around $551 which is a bit hard to swallow
  • Claims to be "UL Certified" so a plus
  • One year warranty, about typical
  • No installation instructions are provided, literally none
  • Reviews complain about how it does not accommodate an electrical back box some say the light is dim
  • Says is its made of brass which is nice
  • Has articulated arm and an up/down swivel on the mirror head which I can see as useful for wife to make final viewing adjustments after swinging it out from the wall
Another one I have looked at is Norabel. It is similar but still not quite the one either
  • More attractive price point of $179
  • Does not have the up/down swivel function on the mirror head. With the 5x mirror, apparently images become greatly distorted and sometimes inverted
  • 5-year limited warranty "All products are warranted to the original owner to be free of manufacturing and mechanical non-conformance from the date of the original purchase"
  • Says its brass and stainless steel
  • Drywall anchor mount and not back box compatible
  • Many complaints that the light is dim and that unit is non-returnable since it was powered up!
  • Shows the "ETL" logo which is an alternative to UL is my understanding
@dave*99 the Baci mirror like you installed appear to be the gold standard if you believe their website which has a portfolio listing of many prestigious hotels. This was the same brand I was involved with one time 8-9 years ago.
  • Prices starting $1000 and up
  • Made in USA by Remcraft in Miami FL!
  • UL listed
  • Uses an in-wall traditional back box
  • Uses normal wiring colors - black, white, green
  • Solid brass construction apparently
  • Round version EH-40 is offered in matte black while square versions are not. We have matte black Delta fixtures.
  • The EH-40articulates and swivels, 1X and 5X magnification
Not sure I have the stomach for a $1000 USA made makeup mirror.....

Ugh

@larry4406

UL, ETL, BV (I'm sure there are more) are all NRTL and can be considered equal.

While I haven't dealt with certification of consumer lighting, based on what I know the listing process isn't that complicated for a product like this.

Maybe you need to look at this another way and get one that's listed, and just consider it disposable at sub $200?

Get UL/BV/ETL, but don't get hung up on colors. Anything sold globally is likely to conform to the larger audience standards then our US expectations.

For years I had a single bulb in a porcelain base above the vanity, I looked high and low for the light I "wanted". After order and returning several options I paid way too much (close to $200/ea IIRC) for what amounts to a sheet metal box, a mount plate and 3 bulb holders. I had the same issues as you with the mounts, at the end of the day the backplate gets screwed to the wall (I drilled to hit studs) and the wire comes out of the box and thru a grommet.

(…)

European wiring colors (brown, blue, green with yellow stripe), (…)

Just in case there was a question in that, this is how it should be, always, always double check before connecting:

brown = hot
blue = neutral
green/yellow = earth/ground/bonding

The reason is most likely, as it has already been said, that these lights were/ are made with another main market in focus. As long as the wire gauge/ diameter is up to the task, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that - generally speaking. How and if code/ inspections oppose any of that I obviously have absolutely no idea as I’m not located in the US.

Kind regards,
Olli

Over the weekend I found a brand by a company called Electric Mirror (EM). The are based in Washington State but their products are made in China.

They do specify a conventional back box and use “normal” black, white, and green wiring. UL listed.

Still looking at their offerings which are in $300-500 range.

I was scrolling through Home Depot's offerings too. I didn't see that one, but they have a ton of mirrors that use rechargeable batteries selling for around $50. I know you want a hardwired one, but for the big difference in cost the battery powered ones look pretty attractive. I'm guessing that with LED lighting they run a long time before you need to charge them up again, so maybe it's not that big a deal.

I think if I went hard wired, having it heated would be a key selling point for me. It would be nice to have a large-ish fog free mirror for shaving after the shower when the beard is softest!!

A better fan will take care of the steam properly. I always shave after showering and don't have an issue

I have a 110(?) CFM Broan brand fan. When I bought it, it was the most CFM on the shelf that also had a light. Its due for replacement, but the fogging issue was since this place was built.

Also oddly it is separately switched. I did not check to see if it uses a conventional wall mounted electric box.

All of the these I've ever seen were controlled by a switch on the unit, sometimes on the wall mount, sometimes on the mirror. They don't get used every time someone turns the lights on in a bathroom, so it's one less wall switch, and if you're going to use it, you're in arms length of it, given the 12" or so focal length of the magnifying mirror. Switch box space in bathrooms is always tight, and who wants to walk across the room to turn it on when they decide to pluck their eyebrows?

Historically, many bathroom vanity light fixtures were listed for use as a junction box. That simplifies planning in romex-land, you only have to work out which stud bay and roughly how high it's going to be, leave a loop, then you can poke a hole in the drywall and fish the wire into the box on the light. Then when your wife decides it needs to be a foot lower, it's not a $1000 change order to open the wall and move the box. I don't know if these are or not, but it wouldn't surprise me, at least the ones that are actually NRTL listed and not just amazon junk. if you want to put them on a box, you can usually use a mounting plate to get it to work out.

I don't want to detail Larry's thread, but ducting (material, path and length) and placement would be next questions.
