Kinda cool, but only really worth it if significantly less than Snap On/Matco/etc and/or you have an independent tool truck that services you with these.

I'm a big fan of a lot of VIM stuff but only to a point.

I spy two very nice button head screws over the cover plate.

That would be a radical departure from the retaining ring design that AJ does for Matco.

Are you sure?
SK lp9p. They made those also and the VIM is basically the modern incarnation of that, also the Olsa 90 tooth.

Both Snap-On, Matco and these prices are list prices, so it's seems pretty fair to compare

You could barely give me VIM products for free with how useless and flimsy the ones I've tried have been, and their knockoff rebrands of ratchets and drill bits marked up to prices higher than Snap-On is like some kind of sick joke. The best ratchets on the market are Snap-On, Matco, Koken, Nepros, and Icon G2 and you'd be incredibly hard pressed to change my mind on that. When literally every one of those brands is cheaper than these, it makes no sense.

And frankly, SK tools weren't that good in the first place. They were just US made and came in green boxes, none of the SK stuff I've come across is any better than old Craftsman in quality, it would be a waste to buy an SK clone with a VIM price tag when you can just buy a better ratchet for less money. Or buy literally the same SK clone ratchet from Olsa for less money.

I disagree about the quality of vintage SK ratchets. I could (and did… many times) rip the anvil off a 3/8” raised panel Craftsman ratchet. This is just at normal strength and , definitely, without any cheater pipes or other extra leverage.

I have never broken a vintage SK ratchet by ripping the anvil off or any other way.

I would not argue that they are as good as ratchets made today. It is borderline ridiculous what the retail prices are on 45170’s. I would not pay more than $5 for one, and it would have to be really nice for me to pay $5 for one… but they are better in every way than the Craftsman ratchets of the same timeframe.

It looks like the street price is around 70-75% of the msrp for the couple VIM things I checked.

Around $100 apiece for VIM USA 1/4" and 3/8" would be decent. The 1/2" price is insane and should be half that.

I sell every 45170 I lay my hands on. A nice one will bring $30 all day, a rough but functional version will still fetch $15.

I don’t care for them…but I’ll be damned if they don’t sell like hotcakes.

I was in NAPA this weekend picking up a new battery for my Bobcat and they had a large new display of Carlyle tools behind the cash register. I've heard people talk about them here before, but have never seen them. I was taken aback by the ratchet prices, with long flexes nearly $150, which is Snap on money. Maybe they are every bit as good, but I'm not sure I'd pay Snap on money for what I or anyone might consider Brand X tools.

I've always thought of VIM as like Bluepoint. A entry level, or cube tech brand. I remember when VW made the Phaeton. I'm sure it was a nice car. Well made in Dresden IIRC. But it was easily Mercedes money. Maybe in Europe VW is viewed differently and maybe it sold well. Here in the US at least, I think you must work pretty hard to change a discount brand into a luxury brand.

They are not as nice as I prefer to use, but my work tools are only insured for a given dollar amount. My work tools exceed the insured amount by a lot, so I took a lot of tools home. My Wright double pawl ratchet was one of them.

I will probably end up going back to my Wright ratchet, though.

I've had a few of the Olsa ratchets and while similar to the SK they do seem to be smoother and feel like they have a higher tooth count. They are definitely a sleeper out there they are fantastic.
