Cryptic....I agree with Strouty. How have things been going and how is the mill working out for you.

Are you satisfied with the VFD? I'm thinking that may be the way I go. I have a rotary Phase Converter, but I get tired of hearing it run.

Not a lot has changed, other than we have more stuff than we have room, hahah. I'd go take some pics, but it's atrocious in there right now..

I haven't done a ton with the mill, just some smaller things, but it's working pretty good. I just didn't want to use it a lot at first since some ******* greased it while it was at the company we bought it from. It has an oiler on it, so I'm thinking someone who thought they were doing a good thing walked by and greased the zerks while it was being stored, not knowing any better. Anyways, I putzed around with it a little bit, but wanted to get the grease out of there before doing a whole lot with it. I just recently took all the zerks out, and scraped all the grease out of the holes, then filled up my new push-n-lube gun to force oil down in there (the oiler hadn't been working 100%, probably plugged) so I could get it cleaned out some. I also had to work the knee gib free since it was chattering on the way down, and the adjustment screw didn't want to loosen. I had to keep at it with oil and penetrating spray to loosen it up so I didn't break the tang off the top and then have to bang it back out.. It's going up and down well now, but I still need to disassemble it to clean everything 100%, but it's totally usable at the moment.

Recently, I've picked up the push-n-lube gun that I mentioned, new felt way wipers, a set of way covers, table covers, some center finders, a gallon of way oil, some transfer punches, a noga indicator holder, and the kurt vise, pro tram, and the 3 axis dro that I made another post about

The vfd is pretty cool. You can use it to just switch single to 3 phase and keep the motor at a constant frequency/rpm, or you can also use it to speed up or slow down the spindle, so you have infinite adjustability. Technically that isn't something you want to do on a motor that is made for a steady rpm, but it will work.. you'll just lose some power due to the reduced frequency. I'd take it over a static or rotary phase converter any day though, since you can make yourself a nice control panel with E-stop (with a brake resistor), as well as fwd/rev, start, and a speed control knob for fine tuning if that's what you want to do. They are a little tricky to setup, since the manuals leave a bit to be desired, but I can help you out if you get a huanyang vfd like I have. It's really not that bad once you have the right info. It was cheap, and seems to work great so far

The big thing that we got is a 1946 ford pickup. We're gonna throw in a built 388ci smallblock chevy and powerglide trans that we took out of the 69 camaro drag car before it got traded off. It's old, dented, and rusty, but practically zero rot. It's got one hole the size of a nickel down in the cowl where your left foot would be. Other than that, it's solid. Frame is all good blasted, and repainted, has rebuilt drum brakes, drop axle in the front, and its even got all the window regulators. Needs new glass, but that's no biggie. We're just going to clean it up, neutralize the rust, and oil the outside to drive it as a beater with a badass motor. The great thing is that it had a clean title with it, so it's already registered.. that way there's no buillshit trying to get it registered later all modified without a title.. wanted to make sure it was legal before doing anything

(the flathead motor didn't come with it.. guy wanted 7k for the motor)

Nice truck, it may get disoriented with the Chevy heart transplant. Just cause the shop is a mess doesn't mean you can't take pictures. I double dog dare you.

This reminds me.. I still have to install more lights! haha.. We got 4 up and we can see, so that got forgotten

We havent gotten much done on the truck, been spending money on guns and milling machine stuff hahaha. The steering column mount had broken inside the cab, so that had to be welded back to under the dash, the steering column itself had to be rewelded to fix the end where it had cracked off. After that we were able to do a quick rebuild on the steering box, and then rearrange the pittman arm and the drag link to get the steering hooked back up

front and rear fenders. no rot, just some fatigue cracks that will get patched from the back, and straightened some

WOW! What a great build!!!

Any more work done?

Can you take a photo of the truck lifted all the way up in the air, maybe with another car underneath or a person standing underneath it?

How much space on each side of the lift do you have?

Can you open the car door and not hit the car or lift next to it?

I will be building a 30 x 30 also and would like to see what it would look like.

Thanks in advance.

I joined a year ago May for some info and I've read 1000's of pages on this forum and haven't posted yet until now. This is such a marvelous build I need to see where it stands today. Any updates? :p

Amazing build, I am addicted to this page. Best few hours I have spent online in quite a while getting ready for my build.
Thanks for doing a great job so those of us needing ideas can dream realistically.

Wow, it's been almost a year since I replied to this. Had some stuff come and go.. the Delta Bandsaw is gone, the lathe is gone, and so is the mobile bank vault that we had the mill tooling in. We put all the mill tooling into a small york? toolbox that my dad had, and honestly it works out much better

Picked up an MK Morse MetalDevil cold cut metal chop saw, a RogueFab hydraulic tubing bender, an AHP Alphatig 200x tig welder, a 2500lb? 32x84" cast iron setup table (it's 10" thick with the ribs on the bottom), and just two days ago, an DoAll MetalMaster 16" bandsaw. I'll post a few pics later when I get home

As for the truck, we're still working on it slowly. Sold the badass small block, and bought a 10:1 pump gas 632ci big block - dynoed at 801hp/848.7tq :3gears:, it's got mustangII front suspension, competition engineering magnum 4 link in the rear, wheelie bars, a winters grand national hd quick change rear, coilovers front and rear, powerglide trans, fully boxed frame, and we're going to be putting a roll cage in it as well

Awesome Thread. I was kinda looking forward to seeing the Viking kitchen finished but no pics? Even a few wives might take notice here if some other builders promised to put in some high-grade food makers along with the rest of the important stuff.

Any chance you have info on the LVL beam, price? or at least the loading specs you went with for the 2nd floor? i'm guessing since you did 2x12's 16oc over the ~15' span you're at around 50LL 20DL? i'm looking to build a extremely stout 2nd story when i build my garage so any details on the LVL beam would be great. I'm currently leaning towards steel, but maybe LVL is a decent option.

Thanks for sharing so much of your build looks fantastic,

Tim

I know it's been 8 years since the last post and over 15 years since the first -- but I remember following this thread when I first joined GJ, and after a fairly long hiatus I came back and was trying to revisit the builds I really enjoyed, but couldn't find this one -- I just had a vague memory of the white house and a dude w/ a big beard standing next to it doing demo work... I knew the OP was big into VW, and also lived in CT... after lots of searching I could never seem to find it...

...then today I popped into another VW thread, saw this thread OP's username and immediately it clicked.

So glad to find this. Hope the OP and his family are still doing well all these years later

I’m planning a similar “connection”. Can you tell me of the whole project build how hard was this connection? Was it an engineering nightmare? What about cost. What percentage of the whole build was the connector? Thank uou
