Finish the rest of the drywall on the ceiling, paint, and trim. Then some sort of a dust collection system to try and keep the place cleaner.

I didn’t get much drywall finishing done. It’s all boarded, but still some mudding and sanding and painting to do. I did set up a dust collection system though.

Made a storage cabinet to fit in the dormer. Used up some spare wood and cabinet doors.

Looks really nice. I sure wish I had a garage at home I just have a gravel driveway and a carport lol. The only shop I have is at work and we can’t bring our own stuff in right now. I need a place to keep my Beetle out of the rain so what I decided to do is make a garage so I went and got some cinder blocks and I’m going to surround the outside of the car port with them then figure out how to make a door on it too.

Holy s*** LX.....I'm in true awe of the ingenuity for this. You transformed that whole house! I really can't get over how great of an idea!! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the rest of the build.

Looking good Don! How you liking the dust collector setup?
I’ve tried it out on the mitre saw and the table saw, but I have yet to really test it with the saw-dust-maker (a.k.a. planer). But so far the Dust Deputy works awesome! As advertised; almost nothing getting to the shop vac. Still working out attachments to the rest of my equipment.

A planer shouldn't be making dust. The miter saw and table saw throw tons of fine dust into the air, but a planer should be throwing chips, which will fill up a small canister very quickly. Those small hosed will probably clog up and be frustrating

I love this shop. How much would it cost to have a drawing done? Did you use readily available steel? Or was that custom bent?
Sorry, I have not been on GJ for quite some time. Been busy on a mustang forum and working on a heads/cam/intake project. Not much has gotten done on the garage. Making good use of the garage though.

To answer your question: all the steel was readily available structural sizes. As for the cost to have drawing done ...as a structural engineer, I don't think I could of afforded myself if I had to pay me :ROFLMAO:. I put a ridiculous amount of hours into the design and detailing.

It worked really well with the planner, but as mentioned, it does fill up the bucket quickly. Still better than throwing chips everywhere all over the garage.

Very nice work on the garage. I saw in the early posts that you added a metal roll door. My wife & I had a 24x25 metal garage built next to our carport & it has 2 metal roll up doors, I was wondering if & what you used to seal the roll part of the door to the body of the garage because has about 2 - 3" of space & will get quite cold in there in the winter. Here is a pic of our new garage with my 69 Mustang.

TBH, hasn’t really been a problem on mine. It has the standard brush style seal (if you want to call it that). When I’m working in the garage, the heater easily keeps up with the heat loss. Besides, my heater isn’t closed combustion, so I need fresh combustion air anyway.

nice looking ‘69 BTW.

Still not much progress, but I did add some hose storage. For the smaller hoses, mounted an ‘80‘s Mustang turbine rim to the wall.

and for the larger hoses, added a couple of 4” PVC pipes to the other wall

The other pair of shorter tubes house shade fabric for our patio pergola.

And since it’s been such a long time since I updated this thread ….the Mustang runs and sounds great!

Been too long since you’ve updated lx.

I gotta tell ya since relocating but not purchasing yet. I’ve looked at several places where your solution was not just a good fit but made that potential purchase a viable option where as I’d have normally just passed it up.

A couple of times the wife’s asked me why I spent so much time looking at these high lid 2-2.5 car garages.

My response…you don’t wanna know hun 😎

It has honesty worked quite well so far, for what it is. Definitely better than no system. Obviously I would prefer a proper system, but that would have required adding a shed on the outside of the garage to house it. And I just don’t have the room.

LOL. I got the billiards room, she got a craft room. I did manage to get a 4'x8' shop closet though. There will be a workbench, stool, and worklight where I could do some small engine repair.
Not much progress lately in the garage. Basement reno got a slight change of use. My 4’x8’ shop never materialized and ended up more like a junk dumping ground. While researching VR goggles one day, my wife came across virtual racing and wondered why I wasn’t all in on this? No room was my reply. So she suggested transforming the “shop” into a VR room! …or vrroom if you will

Cleaned up and finished the room with flooring, trim, and paint, then some shelves and lighting. Next was assemble and put together a rig. Most of the components were sourced used, including the seat from my Mustang. Measured and made all the geometry the same as the Mustang, seating position, wheel, and shifter. Monitor and PC were the only items purchased new. Even the shelves and Unistrut were used or repurposed.

Update to the Mustang Cathedral: picked up a few pieces of metal working equipment.

A little while ago I picked up a mini metal lathe.
IMG_3667-L.jpg
7”x14”, with 4” chuck.
It fits nicely on top of my bench cabinets.

Then this week, I picked up this bad boy…
IMG_3666-XL.jpg
I wanted a mini milling machine to go with the mini lathe. Something like a Craftex CX600 or similar. But then this 2HP, 8”x29” mid-size machine came up for sale.
I got pretty lucky that it fits my setup with fractions of an inch to spare. And I was very conscious of the weight of the machine, but after plenty of engineering and calculation checking, justified that the lift is more than capable.

Super efficient use of space, can’t help but wonder how much that giant hoist cost (you don’t have to say). Yours is The only 1 I have seen like that but I bet there will be more now once we have seen it.

I was curious, because I had forgotten, it seems like so long ago.
$7500 CAD, in 2013 dollars.
I cant imagine what it would be now. They don’t even list the price on the website anymore. “Please Contact” :ROFLMAO:

The entire garage budget was less than realtor fees ;)
And no, have not seen another. ….at least not on my street
