I just finished up installing custom wall racks for storing my standup paddle boards in the garage that I also keep my Sprinter van in. I have 3 boards, all just under 12 feet and fortunately, my garage ceiling is just over 12 feet tall so I built a custom rack to store them all standing up flat against the wall as the most efficient storage method.

Previously, I just had the boards leaning up against the wall in the corner but they scratch up the paint on the walls and and the three of them piled against each other made it hard to walk around them with the van in the garage. Also, the board you wanted to take out always seemed to be the one at the bottom of the pile.
I knew there had to be a better way…

To secure the boards to the wall, I made an upper and lower rack out of 1/2 inch galvanized steel pipe and various fittings. I painted the pipe black and secured it to a 10’ long piece of vertical grain Douglas fir. The Doug fir was the screwed into the wall studs.
The Douglas fir was treated with two coats of tung oil. I used foam pipe insulation for padding to cushion the boards when you stand them up against the wall mounted pipe. The foot of the standup boards rest on a rubber mat for cushioning.

Between the upper and lower rack, there is a third section of Douglas fir with stainless steel pad eye hooks to attach a 1” wide webbing strap for each board. The webbing keeps the boards snug against the upper and lower sections of pipe.

The three boards are now neatly stowed flat against the wall leaving me plenty of room to be able to back the van into the garage and also have space to walk around the van once parked inside.
Next project is a coating for the garage floor. Still trying to decide which direction to go on that project.
Cheers
