I have an opportunity to buy a Monarch 225 vise. It has 6.5" jaws, and from the specs I found online weighs in at about 125 lbs. It's in very good shape. I honestly don't think it has seen much use over the years.

I'd like to offer a fair price, but don't want to overpay, either. It's not worth damaging my relationship with the owner.

What is a fair price for this vise?

Thanks.

Cit: I'd say if its great shape I might up cng's $75 bid to $250 and $500 might be tops. Take a very close look at the top of the dynamic slide because monarchs were made by Prentiss and the bigger vises had some issues with their slides cracking. Maybe from owners hitting with bfh.

Good luck

Looks like he's taking best offer. If you have a relationship with the seller ask for right of first refusal. If he has an offer of 225 he's willing to accept have him call you and let you have it for that or a few dollars more.

General rule is a buck a pound. Depending on vise, upping to 2$ a pound is max. I would say $150 would be my max price. Anything less then $100 is getting into the You **** range.

Bob: that $ per pound is a place to start, but once you get 6 inch wide jaw vises in good shape the per pound price isn't a good fit. especially when you get 8 and 9 inch ones. supply and demand.

i'd probably pay $350 for a 6.5 inch Monarch 225 in great shape and might even pay to have it shipped if it's in great shape. as some of you know i don't NEED a vise and i'm selling quite a few, but those old Monarchs are great looking and working vises. of course if i could buy it for less and i wasn't taking advantage of a widow or son or daughter of the original owner that would be a bonus.

it sounds like the owner is a friend so $300- $350 is what i'd offer even if there was only a $225 offer on the table. of course as i mentioned before the back of the slides on Prentiss vises had issues with crackng/splitting so look close. any pictures??

I just bought one in really nice shape, has most all the checkering on the removable jaw's, for 100.00. some one told her it was worth way more, after it wa listed in FB, she tod me this, and I agreed with her, she still let me have it for a Franklin. 250.00 max, most people don't want a vise that big.

It's definitely worth far more than $100.00. I live in a "vise rich" area, and 6 inch vises generally go for $300-$500 depending on maker and condition. That's flea market pricing. Online pricing is higher.

Also, the nonsense that "most people don't want a vise that big" is a load of ****. The market for large vises may not be huge, but neither is the supply.
