Drilled the base of a new ram for my engine hoist. The shaft is larger diameter than the old one and wont fit into hoist socket. I happened to have a correct-ish sized piece of pipe that I will weld onto lift arm. It might work.

We all spent from Thursday to tonight on vigil for Sophie our near 16 YO cat as she stopped eating or drinking. (tumor in her mouth, under her tongue) My youngest and I took her in for a last vet visit tonight as she became agitated not being able to drink at all and brought her home and buried her. She never liked car rides and cried a bit, but once we got her into the exam room and cuddled her she purred right up to the end.

Finally figured out what to do with the tag end of the trailer safety chains when not in use. Added a couple of threaded eye nuts and marked to insure they do not move. My OCD is now better. Then into the shop and started work on the bucket seats to see if they will fit the baja.... Continuing to clean up.

I hook mine on the bucket over the tongue jack. Bucket protects the electric jack from sun damage. Chains keep the bucket on. Also would protect the plastic handle on a manual jack. Bucket gets replaced every 3-5 years. Not my set up pictured but same concept.

I would have needed at least 6, if not 8, very large conventional clocks to be visible to my dimming vision from everywhere in the shop. Instead I have 2 very clean central displays, visible from anywhere in the shop. And the digit size I got would have required at least 2' diameter ordinary clocks to get that font. I think my solution is simpler. And soo cool.

Modified a driver to fit into a tight space. I had ordered a thin walled version but even it was to thick or the job at hand. So I ground it down to fit. Then painted it lovely safety blue that reminds me of my late father. Worked like a charm!

Did some messing with the garage roof today with regards to knocking down temps, started by throwing some OSB offcuts up there on top of side ended 4x2, just to shade a small section and note the effect.



Shot from inside 30 mins later, around 4 o'clock with ambient temps about 28c, If you look hard you can see the 'effect' lol. Was much hotter yesterday, about 34c ambient and peak recorded roof temp midday 54c



Its hard not to notice how much heat the 'insulated' roller door doesn't keep out , the man door next to it is made out of 4x2 and is much better! Both painted bright white.



Im thinking as a temporary fix to stretch a decent tarp out over the unshaded part of the roof with an air gap, and back the van up the door for when the sun comes over and blasts the front. Any ideas welcome

Cheap or spensive?

Replace the roller door with a conventional overhead door. I've got a 2.5" thick insulated steel door that is far from perfect, but amazingly insulative.

Put another roller door outside or inside of your existing door. The air gap will do wonders in hot weather. Not so much in cold.

Make up four or more 2" thick foam panels to overlay the existing door. You can hinge them to fold up like a room divider.

Applied a heavy coat of my 3 in 1 wiping varnish mix.
Let it sit for 20 minutes, while adding more finish to the spots that were drying faster. Wiped off the excess. After the boxes dry a couple days I‘ll wax and buff them.

This is my third (and maybe last) batch of boxes in my use up the “scraps” project.

Zebra wood tops with two walnut boxes and one roasted ash box.
The roasted ash is the real dark colored wood.
I did need to buy a piece of that to use up the Zebra wood.

I haven't updated in a while... been a bit busy.

Got to spend some time in the shop yesterday. Tossed an eGPU on an oculink card into one of the servers in the rack to test out adding GPU for AI inference. Took one of my batch processes from over 60 minutes down to 10-15. This setup was just a temporary proof of concept, which means I'll probably never fix it... except this GPU is the one out of my gaming rig, so I kinda need to put it back. Anyways, the POC was a success, so time to shop for an actual GPU to use. Currently leaning towards a 5060ti 16G. It'll feel weird putting the better GPU on the server and leaving the older card on the desktop, but I need the higher RAM for the larger models.

Fun update... did a lot of tuning on the setup last night. The test prompt I've been playing with is down to 200s now. It's run a LOT faster after tuning. I went ahead and ordered a new GPU so I can make this more permanent. I need to build some type of little shelf to mount on the side of the rack so the hot air from the servers doesn't blow directly on the GPU.

On the cheaper side, foam filled aluminium slats, being low on overhead height is one of the reasons I went for the roller shutter, very convenient but by design a thin section. Maybe a bigger hightop van parked across the door mad max style is the answer

I have no idea what your building codes are, but the way we do it over here is to rip 2X6 or 2X8 or whatever width works for your roof, which seems to be flat. Nail these "sleepers" over the existing rafters, then use foil-backed foamboard and OSB over those. Leave a gap at the eves for airflow between the two roofs. Finish with your choice of roofing. Now you not only have a well-insulated and ventilated roof system, but it's sloped to shed rain.

Yep. We refer to that as a "hot deck" over here. Ventilation underneath is the trick to making it a "cold deck". It doesn't have to be a huge space for airflow, but will make all the difference in the world.

Of course, we also have to deal with snow and ice, which makes a cold deck critical. If you see icicles hanging off the eaves of a building, it may look pretty, but it's a symptom of a poorly designed/constructed roofing system and will cause ice damming and leaks. The trick to preventing ice damming is to have the deck at the same temperature as the air.

Met with the owner of Tritex Corp. and he had the perfect fabric match and has done a number of Cayman headliners...
Normally he charges $750 + tax, but since I had already pulled the headliner from the car, the estimate became $300 + tax...
I was concerned with attempting this myself mainly due to the deep contours and the possibility of getting wrinkles...
That and the problem with contact adhesive only giving you one shot to get it right... I decided to let the expert do it....
This is what he uses...

I gave him the headliner at 1:00pm yesterday and I got a text at 8:00am this morning that my order was ready for pickup...
I'm impressed, less than 24 hr turnaround...

Finished headliner...


I added painters tape and laid a blanket over the dash to protect from any possible scratches...

Completed the install at 3:00pm today, and didn't break any plastic tabs...
All in all, I saved about $2,300 doing it myself vs the dealer...

As a side note, the owner had a 3D printer out in the shop to replicate plastic fittings / clips that are no longer available...
He recreates broken parts as needed when he's doing a job...

Ran a bead of silicone sealer around the perimeter of the new garage, between the concrete and the bottom metal rail, mostly to keep the ants out.

I left the doors up so the **** would cure, and to air out the stink. Then a couple hours later I returned to find a stupid bird in the rafters that refused to leave. I tried everything, "shooing" it, throwing my hat at it, turning the leaf blower on it, nothing worked. Just go back out the god-damned 10ft door you came in? I sat down in sweaty frustration and doodled on my phone, then the ******* just left on his own.

I know it is supposed to fit out the passenger side but no matter which way I turn it, it will not come out without bending. I have watched the online version of it being done on a 981, but I think the 982 is slightly different.

Which model Cayman do you have? I need to do this to my 17 718 but can’t get the headliner out of the car. I know it is supposed to fit out the passenger side but no matter which way I turn it, it will not come out without bending. I have watched the online version of it being done on a 981, but I think the 982 is slightly different.

Mines a 2016 981S...
I was able to rotate 360 degrees while still in the cabin... I settled with only doing 180 degrees...
The seats need to be pushed all the way forward and fully reclined... The steering wheel needs to be pushed all the way forward and down...
Work the headliner above the steering wheel and with the passenger door open, angle the headboard towards the ground and out...

Then towards the ground, it gets under the door bottom and out...


You can see there is still a little extra space...
