Ever since I saw one of these in your videos I’ve wanted one. I just found one and I was going to pick it up but unfortunately my opportunity to get it has been change because of work. I will see if the woman will hold it for me until I get back but that’s going to be at least 10 days. I hope she does hold it. It’s rough but they just don’t come up for sale all that much by me. There is another one for sale with the pedestal base and the belt guard as well but the sell wants to sell all the tools as a package set for $1000. All 50s king Seleey machines. Table saw (already have one), band saw (will take), belt/disc sander (will take), radial arm saw (only one that seems newer, don’t need) and 100 drill press with Altas table lift (I’ll take the lift. All of it is in very rough condition and looks like it was stored in a shed but not well since everything is rusted. I’ll see if they budge on their price in a few weeks as it’s been for sale for quite a while. Wish me luck. The only pictures I have from the first seller. Also let me know what you think. Are they too far gone?

People have sold those drill press table lifts on eBay for upwards or $600 last I saw. I wouldn't sell it, but if you don't need it, you could clean it up minimally and make back most of the money.

I sometimes forget that I posted this and that here on the Garage Journal and tend to focus on my YouTube Channel. I am currently working on a Craftsman 6 x 48 Belt Disc Sander on a pedestal tool stand. Here a link to the rebuild series:

11b30b4,

I know we were discussing motor speed on the other page for the GP motor. You had mentioned the two sander you have with the 3450 motors.

I have the comparison videos here for the older style and the new one that rotated faster with the ball bearings instead of the bronze sleeved bushings.

The belt is a little loose on the faster one.

The slower one is serial number 103.22350
The faster one is serial number 113.22541
(The Emerson copy of King Seleey)

Curious... What sizes are your machine pulleys and motor pulleys for each sander?

The slower one, the manual calls for a 2.5” drive pulley and that’s what is on it. The manual recommends 1400 rpm final speed for the belt/disc.

The faster one the manual calls for a 2” drive pulley and that will spin it at 2700 rpm final speed for the belt/disc and that’s what’s on it.

I was told by other members that if I were to speed up the one with the bronze sleeves it would not like the heat generated by moving too fast. Either with a 3450 motor or a larger drive pulley.

Both driven pulleys are the overdriven. The slower one is the 3” that the manual states to use. The faster is 2.5” and it is unclear if that is the correct size since the manual does not state it. But considering the ratio is the same for both models I think it is correct but 11b30b4 can verify on one of his.

So for my 103.22500, the manual calls for a ½ hp 3450 rpm motor and for continuous operation, a ¾ hp 3450 rpm motor. The speed attained with a 2” pulley is 2700 rpm. The tool pulley size is not specified but I think it is a 2” or 2 ¼”.

For the 103.22540, the information is the same. Both of these sander are ball bearing models.

What about parts 12 15 and 29 they are bronze sleeves? I know the manual says bearings but there are no ball bearings in the machine. The manual states you have to fill it with 30 SAE oil before use. It also says they are porous and will filter and meter the oil to the shafts. Im guessing its just like sleeved motors that have oil caps like this sander just minus the cotton inside to wick the oil.

I think we are getting confused as I just looked at the serial numbers you wrote and the ones I put up earlier. Yes both your models have ball bearings. This is one of the ones I have 103.22350, its the slower of the two.
The website wasn't working at the moment so I just attached a pdf of the manual.

11b30b4, I have a question for you.

So I asked my cousin if he could pick this up for me and I had been looking for a pedestal stand for a while for my sander. The price was right for the stand and sander. I noticed from the 1 picture that was posted that it has the belt guard as well.

When my cousin sent me pictures of it I noticed that the belt guard was not aligned well. Must be because of the massive 1.5 HP motor that is mounted to it.

I went over your video of the rebuild you did for your sister on your channel. I see the stock one is a solid steel rod and then a cast iron bracket.

From what you can see do you think they broke the bracket? I am hoping they just have it spaced off on the underside with washers. Can’t wait to get home and look it over again.

Unfortunately it’s missing the small fence/rest for the belt part. Everyone on eBay wants what I paid for the whole sander.

Thanks

In the second picture, it shows the factory belt guard support bracket. Based on the picture, it appears to be fine.

Good find with the belt guard. They are somewhat rare. That can be a little fiddle to adjust.

That’s a pretty big motor for the sander.

Yes I hope so, I don’t want to have to fabricate something. That motor will be coming off and most likely be sold. I have a 1954 Craftsman 3/4 HP motor for it.

I will certainly show my progress with this project. I just can’t wait to get home to see it.

I've restored my 103.22540 sander, which is an "updated" version of this sander. It uses a cam system for tracking and tensioning. 11b30b4, I know you have both. Which tension/tracking system do you prefer?

I prefer the 103.22500 tracking system. The tracking system on the 22540 is not great and impossible to adjust one handed.
