If fixed the biggest flaw with vise grips

The first time I saw this was in 1973 when I was a sheet metal apprentice. We sanded a flat spot on a 1/2” washer and TIG welded it on. That was also before the release lever and I recall having to pry open the vise grips with a screwdriver.

Started with a carriage bolt (to have the square portion under the head) and quickly tig welded on a large stainless wing nut. Seemed like the most logical choice and the closest I could find to the old C clamps posted above.

What should we do next?

I have a coupler nut welded to one pair so I can occasionally use it with threaded rod & a slide hammer weight.
I almost did that, but never liked the direction that pulled. What I did was take a link from a 3/8" chain, cut out a section the width of the handle, closed the jaws, and aligned the chain link with the jaws when I welded it on. That way it pulls straight away from what it's holding.
